Why do summer tires suddenly start buzzing at speed?
Many motorists have noticed that summer tires begin to buzz with increasing speed, and this raises questions among many. Indeed, the buzz can be associated with both banal and harmless reasons, talking about more serious issues. Portal “AutoVzglyad” decided to investigate this problem.

Let’s start with the most harmless. Many have noticed, especially on a country road, that tire noise depends on the quality of the asphalt. The fact is that the coating can be produced using outdated technology from bitumen and crushed stone. The peculiarity of the structure of such asphalt is that when it comes into contact with the wheel, a noise or a monotonous hum occurs.

Another reason is the so-called airy micro-cotton. This is most pronounced with summer tires. The fact is that such tires have a denser rubber compound, and the tread pattern is smoothed. With an increase in speed, the air does not have time to escape from under the contact patch, and characteristic pops appear, which develop into a rumble.

With winter tires this effect is less pronounced, because the rubber compound is softer and the tread pattern is deeper with a large number of “cut” sipes. And the speeds in winter are not the same as in summer.

Look out for tires that have the XL index in the name (e.g. 215/45R17 XL). The design of such a tire uses reinforced casing technology to make the tire more durable. Since the frame makes the “shoes” harder, it affects the “soundtrack”.

All of these reasons don’t affect safety in any way, but there’s no escaping the buzz. We’ll have to accept, or slow down, or turn up the music. But there are also reasons for the buzzing that will cause trouble and even lead to a serious accident.

The hum can come from an over-inflated tire, which in turn will cause premature tread wear in the center section. Such tires will have to be discarded prematurely, so always set the pressure recommended by the car manufacturer.

Budget tires can be not only noisy, but also dangerous due to inferior components and economy in development. At speed, such “shoes” can begin to peel off the tread, which can lead to an accident. Especially if the process is on the front wheel.

And cracking in the upper tread layer is often seen on old cured tires. At speed or under load, the process goes too far and such a tire simply bursts. It also leads to unpredictable consequences.
