The consumption of up to one liter of oil for a good 8-10 thousand kilometers is quite legal for modern engines. But if this figure is significantly exceeded by your power unit, then you need to figure out what’s going on. And for this it is not at all necessary to disassemble the engine.
To identify the cause of the increased consumption of engine lubricant, first of all you need to make sure that there is no ordinary leakage. Oil stains on the engine or puddles under the car indicate damage to a seal. These could be crankshaft seals, camshaft seals, leakage under the gasket or sealant, loss of tightness of the plug in the oil sump or oil filter, damage to the oil supply and discharge lines on the turbine. In general, if the dust is in the sealant, it simply needs to be replaced and oil consumption returns to normal.
Oil can also drain if there are problems in the crankcase ventilation system. As a rule, a clogged oil separator causes this problem – this is not only increased oil consumption, but also a problem with intake valves and deposits in the cylinders. Therefore, it is necessary to diagnose this system as well. As well as the valve of the crankcase ventilation system, which is responsible for adjusting the pressure. If it sticks, the oil flies into the cylinders and burns in large quantities.
Old worn engines can eat oil due to wear on the cylinders and pistons, the gap of which can increase significantly over time. In this case, experienced motorists recommend switching to a thicker and viscous oil. However, keep in mind that with a thick lubricant, the engine will start worse at sub-zero temperatures. But we had to beat the oil eater, didn’t we? And if so, then this method works.
Using additives is also an option to beat the engine’s oil hunger. The chemicals will thicken the oil and also soften the rubber seals. And we get profit again.
