According to our foreign colleagues from TheKoreanCarBlog, Hyundai Sonata is not doing well at home: the sedan is inferior not only to its competitors (the same Kia K5), but even older and more expensive models – for example, Grandeur. Of course, the new generation can boost consumer demand. But the Koreans see no reason to invest in it, because by 2035 only electric cars should remain in Hyundai’s lineup – they say it is better to focus on them right away.
Most likely, the Hyundai Sonata will retire in 2025: it will celebrate its 40th anniversary (the first Sonata rolled off the production line in 1985) and will retire. But first, before the end of 2022, it will undergo its final restyling. Although there are no details about what changes the sedan will undergo during this update.
We add that in Russia there is not much demand for Hyundai Sonata. Yes, it is in the TOP-3 of the most popular D-class models, but only because the segment has become very poor in recent years.
According to the first quarter 2022 results, dealers handed over 1,332 Sonatas to customers (-10.4%) – for comparison, Toyota Camry sold 4,363 cars (-13.2%). As for the Kia K5, it was on the second line with a score of 1359 units. Yes, the difference with Sonata is small, but it is clear that K5 suffered much more from sanctions difficulties, as sales fell by a whopping 76.8%.
