But on closer inspection, the idea of tracking the amount of exhaust fumes in the air and stopping traffic as it grows seems questionable. At least for the reason that it is relevant in the first place in an exceptionally rare situation – in absolutely calm weather.
Only under such conditions, harmful car gases remain where they appeared – in the area of the roadway and are not blown away by the wind. But even in this case, stopping the traffic of cars will only worsen the environmental situation at a particular intersection. After all, a red traffic light forces cars to gather in front of it and produce even more harmful gases when idling. Which pedestrians need to breathe.
And at the beginning of the movement, during acceleration, each car consumes the maximum amount of fuel, and as a result sometimes emits larger amounts of exhaust gases – compared to the mode of uniform movement through the intersection. In response to this, the “eco-traffic light” will have to stop traffic again. This creates an artificial traffic jam and pedestrians receive an increased dose of harmful substances.
