Why experienced drivers never confuse bolts and fasteners of complex components

That’s not who we are: this is the moment. We already have to do some operations ourselves, instead of asking for help because it is expensive. But even a seemingly simple procedure can go wrong if you mix up the fasteners. How do experienced technicians remember what came from where? The trick is that they don’t remember this.

Cars, spare parts and gas stations are becoming more expensive every day, not to mention fuel. At this rate, soon everyone who just wants to drive a car will turn to repairing it themselves: there won’t be enough for a car service. It is not difficult to change the brake pads or oil. But when it comes to such a seemingly trifle as replacing the valve cover gasket, by all means close the garage. Not only are there dozens of bolts, but they are all different! And how do you even know what goes where, you ask?

An armchair analyst with strong YouTube and Instagram expertise immediately offers to video everything – from at least three angles. The idea works, nothing can be done about it. Dirty hands, a slipping phone, darkness, etc. – excuses, you know. I see a goal, but I don’t see any obstacles. But there is a much simpler and more accessible Soviet option, which promotes the successful completion of what has been started, rather than the creation of content. And it’s called “cardboard”.

Having realized the need to reassemble the unit and assembly, you need to prepare not only the tools, but also the most ordinary piece of cardboard with a felt-tip pen. The latter are necessary for a schematic projection of the part, as well as markings for mounting points – places for the bolts that we will remove. Once unscrewed, you just need to stick the fastener in the right place on the cardboard – it won’t go anywhere, won’t get lost or forgotten. Clear, simple, understandable. Free!

Experience in maintaining a car does not lie in knowing the parts or owning a garage, but in applied skills, manual dexterity, availability of tools and the ability to solve complex problems with simple, often improvised means. Anyone can do it with a lift and a key box, but with a well and a standard set it is much more difficult. But an ordinary kit will easily fit in the trunk, and an overpass can be found on the side of the road or at a garage cooperative. And this is an important advantage: you can drive the car while others wait for approval of your salary or loan.

That’s how it was in the USSR, that’s how it was in the 1990s, and that’s exactly how it is now. Understand, accept, learn. No other way.
