A certain American online publication Jalopnik recently announced that Hyundai engines are among the worst. Domestic well-wishers immediately picked up this fruitful topic and hastened to trample on the unfortunate Koreans and earn their share of the glory. And the portal “AvtoVzglyad” decided to find out what was not shared abroad with the company from Seoul.

Indeed, the main source of all the fuss was a certain car Internet site from North Carolina with a strange, seemingly not American name at all. However, in slang, Jalopnik means something like ‘Drishpack Lover’, and this more or less matches the thematic focus of the portal. It is not the most authoritative, but quite popular resource – it ranks 17th among American car sites, and its audience is only three times smaller than that of the famous Car and Driver.

Reason for gloating

Naturally, this “Lover of Drishpacks” does not have a strong analytical staff, but still publishes his own rating entitled “Cars with the worst, in your opinion, engines.” Among the fifteen leaders – of course the vast majority are American – there were miraculously two units that were familiar to us: the Volkswagen Jetta 2.0 in first place and the Hyundai Theta II in thirteenth place.

Domestic car experts unanimously ignored the Wolfsburg engine and flocked to the Korean one. The departure of the Germans from the Russian market took place many months ago, and the bitterness of the resentment has probably already softened. And Hyundai only recently began to formally crawl back home, therefore the concentration of negative emotions on it is much higher. Perhaps everything is completely wrong, but the choice of the source of information tends precisely to this conclusion.

There are no perfect ones

Yes, both engines of the Theta II family – 2.0 and 2.4 liters – are not ideal, but they did not cause any particular complaints in Russia, although they were installed on many Hyundai and Kia models. These include the Sonata, ix35, Tucson, Santa Fe, Optima, Sportage, Sorento, Stinger and Genesis G70. Due to the lack of hydraulic compensators, it was necessary to periodically adjust the valve clearances. Solid particles from the catalysts ended up in the engine, causing the piston group to wear out more quickly. There were other complaints about the imperfection of the engines, but they did not create critical mass.

In principle, there are no ideal engines, and each engine can have its own shortcomings. Some have no power, some have no torque. Some have to constantly top up oil, others guzzle gasoline like crazy. Still others are absolutely beyond repair. The fourth have no visible defects, but stand like a cast iron bridge. Therefore, theoretically, there are reasons to create such an assessment, especially if experts armed with objective statistics are involved in its creation.

Opinions of the offended

But the “Lover of Drishpacks” was not concerned with such considerations. He preferred to collect feedback from his readers and allocate places accordingly. “We asked you which cars you think have the worst engines. You all love to complain, so it’s no surprise that there were too many comments to include them all here. But here are the 15 worst engines suggested by you, our favorite commenters.”

So we have something like a popular vote. Also in our country they often try to present such a free flow of collected complaints against car manufacturers as an objective analysis, hold competitions and draw up reviews. But Jalopnik is fully aware of the inaccuracy of the data obtained, because it uses exclusively the subjective opinions of offended car owners. And it is his right to publish material to increase traffic. A question to those who refer to it without indicating how the given results were obtained.
