The buyer of Hyundai’s production site in St. Petersburg will be a Russian company and the terms of the deal include a reverse option. The South Korean brand’s Russian factory stopped producing cars in March last year due to disruptions in the supply of parts.
As TASS reports, on the sidelines of the international industrial exhibition “Innoprom. Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister and head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov told reporters that the decision to buy the Hyundai plant in the northern capital has already been made. “We have already made all our decisions regarding the Hyundai acquisition. At least what was directly stated by the company itself. Therefore, a decision will be taken soon,” the minister said.
Manturov did not specify who exactly is buying the factory, saying only that a domestic company will be the new owner. Let us recall that a few weeks ago information appeared that the Avilon dealer holding was actively interested in the company. It is reported that agreements have already been reached between the parties and the deal will be closed in the very near future. But there are virtually no details yet about the terms.
“As for Hyundai, they are planning with an option. But taking into account the presidential decree, this is limited to two years,” Manturov clarified. More than 2,200 of the plant’s 2,537 employees have been unemployed since car production stopped last year. Before production stopped, Hyundai Solaris, Hyundai Creta, Kia Rio and Kia Rio X-Line were assembled in St. Petersburg. The factory’s capacity was more than 200,000 cars per year.
