Car manufacturers have long started to gradually replace rear drum brakes with disc brakes. It is believed that the latter is much better and more efficient. However, the trend may change and the owners of cars with “drums” are now in a better position. The AvtoVzglyad portal tells why ‘drums’ are much better than disc brakes in a crisis.

The myth of drum brake inefficiency was invented by car marketers. They soon realized that rear disc brakes are seen by customers as an undisputed advantage of the car. Well, then it was just necessary to approve this opinion in the minds of the majority of motorists, which was done.

Now that the crisis is approaching, people have started to save and at the same time think: are the old technical solutions really inefficient and bad? Are they that much worse than the modern ones? Let’s see if the “drums” have any advantages.

Drum brakes have a number of important advantages. First of all, they are perfectly protected from external influences, so they are placed on the rear axle, because a lot of dirt flies there, especially in winter. And if instead of “drums” there are “discs”, the latter will wear out faster. Especially if the manufacturer has saved on mudguards. From this, grooves appear on the inner surfaces of the discs, as they are constantly bombarded by stones and sandblasting. This increases the vibrations during braking and decreases the deceleration efficiency. This means you have to replace both brake pads and discs more often. And now the prices for these parts are very expensive. Let’s not forget the shortages promised to us due to supply chain disruptions.

The drum pads are much more durable, which can significantly reduce service costs. “Classic” brakes can last even 70,000 km, while disc brakes give up after 30,000 km.

Another advantage of the “classic” brake design is that they have a high stopping power. Due to the closed design, the friction surface of the pads on the drum surface is quite large. This improves braking performance. Therefore, such brakes stop the car no worse than disc mechanisms.

In the end, we note that the “drums” are more prone to overheating and wear products accumulate in them. However, if your driving style is far from sporty, overheating of the brakes in the city is almost impossible. Wear products are removed with compressed air during maintenance. This is much cheaper than maintaining disc brakes, which require regular cleaning and lubrication.
