Parts and suspension components of every car are designed, but fail with a certain frequency. After all, car brands also make good money by selling spare parts to their customers. Advanced motorists have learned to minimize the cost of “shaking up” their car’s chassis.

Most of the price of suspension repair consists of the cost of spare parts. The design of many of the elements is based on a ball joint covered with a boot made of special rubber. New ‘ball’ ones are quite expensive now. Especially when it comes to these parts for cars from foreign brands.

They fail for two main reasons. First of all, because the seat of the hinge finger in a special “lining” in the body breaks over time due to variable loads on the suspension. The ‘finger’ starts to wiggle in it. The second reason for the failure of the ball joint or the tip of the lever lies primarily in damage to the trunk. Moisture and dirt enter the whole through the resulting hole. Corrosion and wear of the pin in the liner, accelerated by the presence of abrasives, leads to the need to replace the unit.

Experienced car owners noticed it already in Soviet times: if you maintain the elasticity of the trunk at a high level, it not only does not crack over time, but also breaks much less often. To prolong the “youth” of rubber, treatment with silicone oil – polymethylsiloxane – was already used at that time. This is a liquid silicone substance with good lubricating properties and high chemical inertness.

In the last century, it was possible to get a jar of such a liquid only through friends in a production facility, but now it is presented in a wide range and at minimal prices on marketplaces.

Various grades of the substance are sold – from PMS-0.65 to PMS-10000. They differ in viscosity indicator: the larger the number in the marking, the higher it is. PMS with an index of 100 or more are suitable for processing ball joint boots. Any “silicone” will restore the elasticity of the rubber boot. It’s just that a thicker one will last longer on the surface.

This is, as it were, a preventive measure that significantly extends the lifespan of the suspension elements. But what if the “ball” has already been broken? And in this case, “chemistry-chemistry” also comes to the rescue. According to a method invented a few decades ago, a hole is drilled in the hinge body with a dangling “finger” and a molten polymer of a certain type is pumped into it under pressure. And sometimes even without disassembling the ball joint! The slurry fills all the free space in the joint body and hardens there, effectively forming a new lining that firmly holds the “finger”.

Restoring one ball joint with this method will cost about 1,000 rubles, which is not comparable in price to the purchase of a new one. The described procedure is sufficient for 20,000-25,000 kilometers. It can be repeated up to three times on one “ball”. Which really means one thing: a car owner who makes these types of suspension repairs is more likely to sell the car than have to buy new parts for it.
