The governor of the Kaluga region, Vladislav Shapsha, announced “serious volumes” for the future for the former Volvo factory. After a transfer of ownership, Ural can become one of the partners of the company.
As TASS reports, Kaluga Governor Vladislav Shapsha said the aim is to assemble up to 10,000 trucks per year at the former Volvo plant. “The assembly of the trucks will start at the end of November. This year we will assemble the first 50 cars. The plans are to take the business to serious volumes, almost up to 10,000 cars per year,” said the head of the region. He also added that 650 company employees are moving from Volvo to the new owner.
Now the site is owned by the Industrial Investments group of companies and Ural can become one of the company’s partners. Volvo’s Kaluga plant opened in January 2009 and has a design capacity of 15,000 trucks per year. It has been at a standstill since last year due to sanctions, but in September the assets of the Swedish brand were transferred to a Russian investor.
