When the first trailer for the Sonic movie was released, the internet hated the design of the blue hedgehog. The film had to be shelved, the hero recast, and the film was a success. Turns out the first design wasn’t in vain, as it’s now featured in the new Tico e Teco movie, available now on Disney Plus.

Sonic with a strange design eventually became a legend, and the producers could not help but take advantage of his popularity, albeit negative. Spoilers ahead: In Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, the ugly blue hero has his own booth at the Comic Con-style fair and signs autographs there.

The character himself plays with one of the most quirky features of his design: his human teeth. “They will love me for who I am, not like the last time the internet took a look at my teeth and everything fell apart,” ugly Sonic comments.

After signing once, people laugh at him, who says: “Oh, they laugh at me. I know. You can’t offend me if I’m joking.” He then reveals that he will be involved in a new series called “Ugly Sonic, Uglier Crimes” in which he accompanies the FBI in solving crimes.

Then Tiko (or Teko, hard to tell) asks, “Really? You?”. Sonic then replies, “Yeah, is that so hard to believe?”. The camera then zooms in on Sonic’s human-toothed mouth, and that’s when you see that Disney has embraced the hype forever.

Film director says Sonic cameo is his favorite

Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers director Akiva Shaffer said in an interview with Polygon that Sonic’s cameo is his favorite among several other celebrities featured in the film. “This is one of my favorite films. I guarantee it. This is one of my favorite moments in the film. And I’m very happy that people will see it,” says the director.

“It was really important for me to get a lot of third-party cartoons, because if it’s kind of a celebration of animation, then it can’t just be a celebration of Disney animation,” Shaffer said.

The director of the new film Tico and Teco thanks Disney’s lawyers for obtaining a license for this film. “Usually, after watching a movie, you don’t feel like thanking the lawyers, but we sincerely owe the Disney lawyers for being part of the team,” the director explains.

Both Sonic films were box office successes. Sonic 2 broke records in the US as the biggest live-action film debut. In Brazil, the second film sold over 800,000 tickets in less than a week. The success is such that the third film about the blue hedgehog is already secured. The first film is available on Netflix.
