The formal orgy around Soviet car brands – few knew the word ‘brand’ at that time – will not disappear. A new thread appears once a quarter, breathing new life into this stupid topic. The portal “AvtoVzglyad” tried to understand who and why has difficulty sleeping in the absence of the crafts of the Soviet car industry that have deservedly fallen into oblivion.

The meaning of all these games of naming and renaming is, frankly, difficult to grasp. For example, why was it necessary to produce ‘Muscovites’ in abandoned Renault production facilities instead of honestly cloning JAC JS4 and JAC A5 Plus from imported vehicle kits there, without worrying about the vulgar re-gluing of nameplates?

Cheating

“If you read the inscription ‘buffalo’ on the cage of an elephant, do not believe your eyes,” Kozma advised Prutkov. However, such open deception adds no respect to the phrase “domestic auto industry.” it brings a laugh to some, disappointment to others, because everyone knows full well what lies beneath the whimsical logo on the hood.

Nevertheless, the idea of the desirability of such transformations is firmly established in the minds of some representatives of the Russian government. The instigator was, as always, the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov, who told the agency RIA Novosti in June that his ministry supports the revival of the Oka car brand: “We will in every possible way support those colleagues from Als If the automotive industry comes up with such proposals, we are ready to consider such a matter immediately.” Vyacheslav Volodin also advocated “bringing back” the original Russian brands.

– Production of Volga cars will start soon. We intend to claim it too,” the chairman of the State Duma assured Rossiyskaya Gazeta in August. Unfortunately, he did not indicate who will claim this car and for what purposes.

From ‘Brokeback’ to ‘Soapbox’

And recently, a fellow Duma member was supported by Senator and member of the Economic Policy Commission, Dmitri Vorona, who gave an extensive interview to the Parliamentary Newspaper. He promised, among other things, to restore the Zaporozhye car factory:

“We absolutely believe we will take this business back and restore it.” The Kommunar factory, as it was originally called, was intended to produce cars for people, so a complete production chain was created around Zaporozhye to ensure local production of cars. Of course, you remember both “Zaporozhets” and “Tavria”, and then Daewoo. We had problems with the engines, but I think these will be resolved when we return to full cycle production.

Yes, dear Dmitry Nikolaevich, we remember both Tavria and Daewoo well. In fact, we remember all the “Zaporozhets”, starting with the ZAZ-965, which bore the modestly respectable nicknames “Humpback Whale” and “Jewish Armored Car”, and up to the ZAZ-968, which was popularly called the first “Eared” , and due to the loss of the side air intakes – “Soapbox”. However, you could hardly get to know them up close because their production stopped on your 14th birthday.

It should be noted that there were problems not only with the engines, but also with the engine cooling system, suspension, comfort and interior heating, and finally with the design. “Tavria” and Daewoo also did not have high consumer characteristics even at the level of a “people’s car” – except that the price was relatively reasonable.

Half an hour of shame

The desire of the representative of the Zaporozhye region in the Federation Council to lobby for the creation of jobs and profitable business in his region is generally understandable. What will Mr. Vorona do to revive the factory, which, by the way, is still located on the territory occupied by the Ukrainian Armed Forces? Another Sino-Russian badge engineering? Or your own production based on technological solutions that do not yet exist? Or perhaps the actual implementation of the stated intentions does not matter at all?

There are strong suspicions that the whole point here is simply a matter of PR. The company Otkritie Auto, part of the VTB group, shared the latest results of its sociological research: 73% of respondents consider the revival of Russian brands from the Soviet era to be a good idea, and only 27% are against their return. Satisfying three quarters of the Russian population at once is so great and useful for your career.

It’s just a shame that Otkritie Avto’s figures arouse great distrust. Unless of course comments like: “Yes, revive whatever you want, I’m tired of worrying” were not taken as a positive response. But be that as it may, Dmitry Vorona must wait until those who get nervous at the word “Zaporozhets” have finally died out, and who still remember very well what they said about this technical misunderstanding in Soviet times, for which it is so now. fashionable to be nostalgic: “Half an hour of shame, but not on foot!”

It is not necessary to have a rough grandmother – both in the literal and figurative sense of this expression.
