Horror stories circulate on social networks and the Internet about remote jamming by foreign car manufacturers who have permanently abandoned Russia when their owners contact domestic gas stations.
Horror stories circulate on social networks and the Internet about remote jamming by foreign car manufacturers who have permanently abandoned Russia when their owners contact domestic gas stations. Should the broad mass of car owners in our country be afraid of something like this?
– No foreign car manufacturer will turn the car of a Russian car owner into a “stone”. Such messages on social networks and the media can only be called fake. In addition to cars imported into Russia under various “gray” schemes from Europe, Asia or the Middle East, on our territory there are cars (registered abroad) owned by foreign citizens. There are also embassy cars. For this reason alone, no one will block vehicles in Russia on a territorial basis. In any case, the organizations participating in the Russian Union of Automotive Services have never reported forced blocking of foreign cars from abroad,” said automotive expert Stanislav Svetozarov, deputy general director of Interlaken-RUS LLC, about the situation.
According to him, cars that are ‘disconnected’ from the servers of foreign car manufacturers are now simply deprived of the opportunity to report ‘at home’ on maintenance or the rectification of any malfunctions. Otherwise, they will continue to function as before. Unless, for example, after a planned replacement of the brake pads, the defective ABS icon on the dashboard of such a car continues to illuminate, as this can only be extinguished by a “go-ahead” from a server of a foreign brand. It is clear that in this case the owner will have a hard time when meeting with traffic police officers.
– A modern car can completely ‘die’ during diagnosis due to various scenarios and without any ‘remote shutdown’. Most of these are associated with the ‘crooked hands’ of repairers. For example, the CAN bus may freeze. Or the operator enters a menu section that requires confirmation from a foreign server. Or even to a protected subsection. This or that control unit sees this as an attempt to steal the car’s electronics and completely “extinguish” them in order to protect the car owner, Svetozarov explained.
Due to the shutdown of Russian ‘officials’ by foreign car manufacturers, our companies must gain access to proprietary software through workarounds. For example, with the help of a kind of mediation service from European car repair organizations. That is quite expensive for car services, and therefore for the customer. But in any case, after visiting the gas station, the car will not become a “stone” – it is a fake or, we repeat, the “crooked” hands of the military.
