Sales of pick-up trucks in our country have traditionally always been microscopic. Well, would any sane person even consider driving a commercial truck through a metropolis? After all, we’re not in the vast expanse of Texas. However, the rapid flow of events, including political ones, caused unexpected adjustments: the Russian market for such “trucks” grew threefold by the middle of this year! Yes, the victory is still small in absolute numbers (about 1,700 cars were sold), but by the standards of the class it is a success. And of course, the show here is now ruled by the ubiquitous Chinese, who have entered into battle with the former bestseller of the UAZ Pickup segment.

Thus, the Dongfeng company announced the start of sales of the next SUV, presenting the classic pickup with DF6 frame to the Russians. If you look at it from the front, the image of a Toyota Hilux immediately appears in your subconscious, but our hero has absolutely nothing to do with this model. Thanks to the collaboration with well-known car manufacturers, our eastern partners did not have to completely reinvent the wheel. Dongfeng DF6 is a collaboration with Nissan.

Simply put, this is nothing more than the good old Nissan Navarra, which can still be found in sufficient quantities even on the streets of the capital. By the way, the Mercedes-Benz X-class, which has already sunk into history, if someone suddenly forgot, was based on the same platform.

In short, the DF6 uses the frame, engines and transmission of its Japanese brother and that’s not a bad thing. In addition, the body is galvanized, which is crucial for use in the brutal Russian winter conditions.

The potential buyer is therefore given the choice of three configurations of the “rogue”: Comfort, Premium and Luxury. With the first option you get the good old Nissan turbo diesel engine with a power of 136 hp. Of. (305 Nm) with a capacity of 2.5 liters and a 5-speed manual gearbox. This version is the most “cargo,” which is often what tough guys need on rough terrain.

The next in rank is the car, with under the hood a more modern 2.3-liter turbo diesel from the Renault Master commercial vehicle with a power of 163 hp (380 Nm) and a six-speed manual gearbox. Well, the line is crowned by a luxury version with the same “renowned” engine and a classic 8-speed “automatic” from the famous German company ZF.

Everything is clear about the part-time four-wheel drive system and the transfer case; they were created in close collaboration between the Chinese and leading manufacturers such as BorgWarner and Bosch. So there is already some confidence in the reliability of the new market product. Well, the atmosphere is added by color schemes that are quite unexpected for this class of car: bright yellow, bright blue, red, etc. In the highest trim levels, the interiors are decorated with beautiful leather upholstery and large 9-inch screens. And two types of crash bars to choose from in the bodywork are standard equipment on every version of the DF6. To finally be convinced of the remarkable capabilities of the pickup, we went to the mountains of the Caucasus.

In just a few days, our Chinese heroes conquered several serious passes in the Elbrus region, a number of gorges and canyons, as well as a few picturesque mountain twists. Looking ahead, I can say that all cars performed more than decently, especially considering that the occupants sometimes did not have enough air to breathe normally. The only thing you shouldn’t do with a manual DF6 is reduce the speed below 1500 rpm.

In this case, the engines begin to choke and lose traction. But in mountainous conditions and under very difficult off-road conditions. But the smart ZF “automatic” delighted with its ability to quickly adapt to situations. Sometimes, of course, he got lost and didn’t understand which gear to put in; after all, there were already eight of them, but overall the gearbox turned out to be quite tolerable. However, if you ask which version of the DF6 I would prefer, then my choice most likely fell on the middle version with a six-speed manual transmission, as the most correct and “pick-up”.

Since pickup trucks like to “goat” when they become empty, the engineers came up with a rather interesting solution in the rear suspension: when the body is empty, the fifth spring is not loaded, which increases the level of comfort. And when the “box” is loaded, the fifth spring is loaded, increasing the load capacity. The car’s weight is sensibly set at 2,499kg to avoid the Russian capital’s silly and obscure ‘cargo frame’.

When driving on asphalt, the DF6 behaves confidently and predictably: independent front suspension on double wishbones and a classic hydraulic booster – things that have been proven for decades. Except the rear drum brakes were a bit surprising and took the mind back to the past millennium. However, this had little effect on braking efficiency; After all, the pickup isn’t a Ferrari and you won’t be able to drive it much. In short, if you are a fan of frame classics, it is worth considering the option of such a vehicle. Finally, something about the most delicate thing and this, as always, is the price. The most affordable Comfort version costs 3,299,000 rubles, for Premium they ask 3,449,000, but for the top-end Luxury package you have to pay 3,799,000 rubles. And yes, not a single pickup was injured during the tests!
