The most powerful SL received the long index 63 SE Performance, a reference to the hybrid installation known from the recently introduced Mercedes-AMG GT liftback. The 816 hp roadster has a 4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine and electric all-wheel drive.
On the rear axle of the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 SE Performance is the so-called AMG Electric Drive Unit – a unit that combines an electric motor, a two-speed gearbox and a mechanical limited-slip differential. The distribution of traction between the petrol engine and the electric motor is controlled by the AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system. The electric motor drives the rear wheels, but if they slip, it can transmit torque to the front axle via the driveshaft.
The traction battery under the trunk floor has a capacity of only 6.1 kWh, so on electric traction, if someone suddenly needs it, the roadster can travel only 13 kilometers. But from 0 to 100 km/h, the SL 63 SE Performance is catapulted in 2.9 seconds and can accelerate to 317 km/h. Naturally, it has a fully controlled chassis and an active aerodynamics system: a controlled rear spoiler and a retractable fairing at the bottom.
The basic package of the 63rd SL also includes the AMG Active Ride Control suspension with active roll suppression function. Competitors in such designs usually use electromechanical stabilizers, but Mercedes-AMG uses hydraulics – all four adaptive struts are connected by one line, and the pressure in them is controlled by special valves. The system is not only able to “tilt” the bodywork, but also to adjust the suspension stiffness of each wheel individually. The cost of the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 SE Performance and the start date of sales have not yet been announced.
