Hyundai recalls 280,000 vehicles due to dangerous seat belts

Hyundai Motor America, the North American division of South Korean company Hyundai, has announced a recall of 239,000 vehicles in the US and approximately 42,000 in Canada. According to the AvtoVzglyad portal, the action was caused by traumatic seat belts.

The recall includes the 2019-2022 Hyundai Accent and the 2021-2023 Hyundai Elantra. Consider that most of the nodes used on the Hyundai Accent are similar to those used on the Hyundai Solaris.

According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in the event of an accident, the front seat belt pretensioners on the driver’s or passenger’s side could fall apart when deployed. A case was recorded when, during an accident, the driver’s belt tensioner nearly exploded, damaging the passenger’s leg with its fragments. So far, two such injuries have been reported in the United States and one in Singapore.

NHTSA asked Hyundai to resolve the issue. According to Reuters, the Korean automaker is carefully studying the cause of belt tensioner malfunctions, including on the Hyundai Venue and Genesis GV70/GV80 crossovers. Be that as it may, during the recall, branded dealers will place special protective covers on the pretensioners.

It is known that belt tensioners for Hyundai cars, produced at the company’s Russian plants, were imported to us from abroad. For this reason, it can be assumed that Russian owners of branded cars should not be insured against injuries caused by exploding seat belt tensioners. It was not possible to receive comments on this topic from the Russian representative office of Hyundai, the editors of the AvtoVzglyad portal.
