Cool AvtoVAZ projects that wanted to “shoot”, but couldn’t
Anyone who believes that nothing shines for our auto industry is wrong. There are heads in our villages who naturally know how to do really cool things. Even the long-suffering AVTOVAZ rolled out concepts with enviable regularity that could claim the laurels of the entire automotive industry. The AvtoVzglyad portal decided to remember perhaps the most unique of them. Or rather, remember.

A design idea brought to life is half the battle. And in the case of the automotive industry, this is the beginning of the journey. As appealing as the concept looks, it will certainly be criticized by engineers of various stripes. And designers will unfortunately have to take their opinions into account and look for solutions that are suitable for everyone. But that is not everything. Marketers, PR specialists, estimators and other highly competent individuals make their own adjustments.

But the most important test is the economic health of the country and the potential buyer of the new product. After all, if everything is like this with them, then no matter how “bomb” the car is, the final cost can become a real problem, making it not destined to reach the series. It was the same with many concepts from different brands, and AVTOVAZ is no exception.

Here, for example, LADA C. If anyone does not remember, in 2007 this prototype was presented not just anywhere, but at the most important motor show in the world – the Geneva Motor Show. The three-door hatchback was a joint development of VAZ and the Canadian Magna International.

Then AVTOVAZ’s vision of the future impressed the general public of the prestigious exhibition. The LADA C incorporated all the best of the global auto industry – BMW brakes, electronics and sensors of all kinds, of course, from BOSCH, Audi shared a steering column with the concept, and its Volkswagen gave its multimedia system to domestic development.

And even the emblem, which flaunted on the front, was rotated in keeping with the hatchback’s design concept. However, the onset of the global crisis in 2008, which affects the industry deeper and deeper even today, LADA C remained a concept – the project was closed.

Have you seen the VAZ 2108 Targa? Those growing up in the early 80s and 90s probably bit their elbows when this roadster was introduced in 1988. Frankly, even today I remember my “eight” with a short wing with warmth in my heart. And if I was then offered “Targa”, I would not hesitate to buy it for personal use.

The open-top concept was developed by the domestic automaker’s Style Center in view of foreign experience. Vladislav Ivanovich Pashko was responsible for the exterior design. The basis, because it is not difficult to guess, was the G8. Otherwise, all the nuances of such cars were taken into account – the Targa received both an electric frame, a canvas roof, and vents in the front side windows.

What can I say, the concept even had a trunk, which later migrated to another “hit” – VAZ 21099 and – oh my God! – elongated wings for the first time. Overall it turned out perfectly. But alas, everything here remained at the prototype stage, which has not even survived to this day.

Among the “VAZ” developments were electric vehicles – a trendy topic today. VAZ 2802-02 “Pony”, introduced in 1984, looked cool and impressed with functionality. The twin electric van was equipped with a 25 kilowatt electric motor that fed a 423 kg nickel-zinc battery. At the same time, the payload of the van itself was 500 kg. Power reserve “Pony” was limited to 78 kilometers. And the maximum speed that the van could develop was 74 km/h. At the same time, the total length of the concept was only 2.5 meters.

Yes, it fits perfectly into the urban environment, not only with its spectacular appearance, but also with its size. It is noteworthy that the electric truck is made of aluminum and plastic, which has significantly reduced its weight. But alas, they counted, thought and decided that this workaholic had no prospects in the domestic market. The project is frozen.

Overall, we have something to be proud of. We have order with both engineers and designers. The main thing now is to competently manage human resources, remember the past and act. And you see, we’ll have our own electric cars and new models for the people. Yes, and life will get better, life will get more fun.
