The former Volkswagen car plant at the Grabtsevo industrial park in the Kaluga region, which was due to restart on New Year’s Eve, should return to work soon. In the meantime, the company will be shut down until February 29, 2024.

As Interfax reports, the governor of the Kaluga region, Vladislav Shapsha, told the television channel Rossiya 24 that there is very little left before the launch of the former Volkswagen plant. “I am sure it will work in the first half of this year. The final touches to these negotiations have already been completed,” he said.

In late December, the head of the region called the earlier launch dates irrelevant but did not explain why, citing trade secrets and some tricks from competitors who are “trying to immediately put a spoke in our wheels.”

Now the governor is confident that the company will restart. “And everything will develop as it should,” Shapsha promised.

The factory, owned by AGR, has a capacity of 225,000 vehicles per year. Until spring 2022, the company produced Volkswagen Polo and Tiguan models, as well as Skoda Rapid. In addition, a factory was operating in Kaluga that produced gasoline engines with a capacity of 150,000 units per year.
