The first “flight” of parallel imports was the somewhat forgotten, but again popular “Arabs” – cars originally made for the countries of the Persian Gulf. At first glance, they are damn attractive: rich equipment, new options, low price. However, in reality, everything is different, as the AvtoVzglyad portal found out.

The shortage of new cars in Russia has been going on for a few years, so official and not very dealers introduced parallel imports much earlier than the state: new cars from the UAE flashed in showrooms late last year, and by the beginning of 2022 they were no longer shy and began to exhibit them in the most prominent places, about which the AvtoVzglyad portal wrote a few months ago. A dealer who makes a living from sales simply couldn’t afford to miss out on a new car at exorbitant prices.

Cars from the warm countries of the East have always been an enviable demand among Russians: rich equipment, woody interior trim and obligatory leather seats have attracted many motorists. But the main reason for “love of people”, trivial as it may sound, was of course the price: “Arabs” were always – both new and on the secondary market – cheaper than “Europeans”, “Japanese” and “Americans” officially imported or from colder countries.

Arab cars are good for everyone, but they also have drawbacks. That’s how the world works, balance. Yes, there are no miracles. Behind the initially low price hides not only a significant discount on resale, but also quite tangible shortcomings during use. “Arabs” are not really treated with anti-corrosion agents during production, so in Russia they literally begin to rust after the first rain. Finding a diesel car is incredibly difficult – in the land of cheap fuel, powerful and voracious gasoline engines are preferred. True, due to the age of development and a weak “environmental stranglehold”, such units can afford much higher mileage and taxes.

“Warm options” – also a weak side of these machines. Of course there is no heating. But if the “fifth point” can be saved in winter with the help of an inexpensive household “Emelya”, then with a frankly weak stove, which simply cannot heat the interior in the cold, you will have to perform complex work and expensive replacement work.

The biggest problem is lubricants and fluids. They were originally designed for a warm climate, so even in mild frosts they will get greasy and stop working. And that goes for everything from the “tray” and the motor, to bearings and door hinges. Yes, yes, the door may just not open, or worse, not close due to the lubricant freezing completely. Of course the first MOT is very expensive, simply because you have to replace everything and everywhere.

Considering the purchase of an “Arab”, one should carefully and carefully add up all the “pluses” and “minuses” of such a machine, calculate its strengths and find an opportunity to level its “features”. Putting the above together, you just need to list it and compare it with the real cost of a car already ready for Russian conditions. It looks like the numbers will be very close.
