Many engine manufacturers not only advise, but directly insist that dealers and owners of their cars use only original oils and lubricants recommended by them. Not only is the term “original oil” itself questionable, but now, due to sanctions, branded lubricants can no longer be found at noon with fire! What about those motorists who strongly believe in the power of the “original”? Let’s find out.

The production of oils and other technical fluids for cars is in no way the same as pressing sunflower seeds or olives under pressure and then bottling the resulting bottles. Modern lubricants for engines and machine transmissions are so technologically advanced that you need a very serious immersion in the process to get at least some worthwhile result. Therefore, there is no need to create the illusion that an automobile company or an outboard engine manufacturing company stamps their products in the main workshop, and behind the wall in the next room, other employees turn oil into branded oil.

In fact, everything is much more prosaic: the car factory buys its products from one of the oil producers and packs them in its own containers. Thanks to this arrangement, the companies actually buy oils in bulk and, in the language of businessmen, “fix” their percentage. At the same time, there are no marketing and advertising costs, except for the line with the recommendation in the car’s owner’s manual.

And another thing: it is the original oils that are responsible for most of the counterfeits in the store network. Most drivers do not know what the packaging with the “original” should look like and what should be on it. And the high price of the “original” makes its counterfeiting a particularly profitable business. Therefore, I apologize for the pun, you can only buy the original original from official dealers for insane money.

So if you think that “original oil” is the best and only possible for your car, then you should know that this is not always the case. If we talk about motor oils, then the viscosity of the lubricant according to the SAE J300 standard matters here (these are the designations we are used to on canisters 5W-30, 10W-40, 5W-50), the base (synthetic derivative of oil or natural gas), as well as oil grade compliance with widely recognized ACEA (A3/B4, C2), API (SN, SM, CF) standards. Knowing the parameters of the oil recommended by the factory for your car will allow you to choose a product that is in no way inferior to the “original”, and often the same “original”, only at a more reasonable price.

Take, for example, a very serious Turkish oil producer, Opet Petrolcülük A. Ş (perhaps during your vacation in Turkey you saw one of the 1600 gas stations of this brand, founded in 1992). So, in its line there is a fully synthetic Opet Fulltech 5W-30 motor oil, which was originally developed as an “original” for Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and BMW cars. And such oil, by the way, already exists in Russia.

In the autumn of 2019, a new Opet Lubricants factory was commissioned, which today is one of the most modern fuel and lubricant factories in Europe. This factory now produces original oils and technical fluids for Ford Truck, Tofaş (a brand of Turkish cars produced in the city of Bursa), and a number of other agricultural machinery manufacturers. Opet lubricants have international quality certificates ACEA, API, SAE and ILSAC and are exported to more than 25 countries around the world.

The product matrix of OPET Petrolcülük A. Ş includes oils and all technical fluids for the operation of cars and trucks, agricultural machinery, motor vehicles, water and industrial vehicles. In terms of quality and tolerances of equipment manufacturers, Opet products are in no way inferior to the products of departed Western brands, making them an excellent replacement for Russian motorists.
