Somehow, anti-Russian sanctions caused problems for everyone, and the State Traffic Inspectorate is no exception. As Oleg Ponaryin, deputy head of the Main Road Safety Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, told the AvtoVzglyad portal, the restrictions imposed have forced the road police to adjust their plans to update the fleet. If the traffic cops used to go to buy the usual Skoda Octavia or Kia Cerato, now they look at the UAZ.
Speaking at the forum of road initiatives “Innovative technologies and intelligent transport systems in road construction”, organized by the state-owned company Avtodor, Mr. Ponaryin noted that the traffic police planned to purchase 4,000 brand new cars this year. But the Ukrainian crisis broke out and the renewal of the fleet had to be postponed. In addition, the department now has to look for a new partner, because it no longer needs to rely on old suppliers.
— We also bought Skoda Octavia and LADA Vesta. We hoped for the delivery of Kia Cerato, but now we focus exclusively on the domestic manufacturer, in particular UAZ,” Oleg Ponaryin told the AvtoVzglyad portal.
The final decision has not yet been taken, active negotiations are underway with the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation. But since the traffic police still plans to purchase cars by the end of 2022, it is obvious that they will choose from existing models (not a mythical Moskvich from the capital’s factory). And because the story of the UAZ looks quite realistic.
However, fleet renewal is not the only “sanction problem” for the State Traffic Inspectorate to solve. Restrictions have also slowed the pace of purchasing road performance measuring equipment, such as retroreflectometers (devices to determine the nighttime visibility of road signs). However, according to our interlocutor, this should not affect the safety of drivers, as the most important purchases were made in 2019-2021.
