From the moment the Gorky Automobile Plant mastered the production of Gazelles, the question immediately arose that the main small-tonnage vehicle of “All Russia” needed an economical diesel engine instead of a voracious ZMZ gasoline. After a while under the hood of a modern “truck” tried many options, including atmospheric tractor options, the GAZ-560 unit, no Steyer, took root. But not for long.

The full dieselization of light gas transport started in the summer of 2010, when GAZ introduced the production version of the Gazelle Business, equipped with a Cummins ISF turbo diesel. With a capacity of 2.8 liters, this engine produced a relatively modest 120 hp, but later a 150 hp version was offered for the Gazelle Next. And the owners often “flash” the engine control unit for all 200 “horses” themselves!

Meanwhile, as an alternative to the China-made American diesel engine, which is Cummins, in Nizhny Novgorod they’ve given some serious thought to the Mercedes 110-hp OM646 from Sprinter vans. But then the “Chinese-American” was favored by a moderate price, an impressive resource and … the scale of deliveries: Cummins immediately offered wholesale shipments of engines of various sizes for Gazelles, Valdaevs and PAZ buses.

At the end of the 2010s, the GAZ group was courted with great power by the Volkswagen concern, which offered many of its developments – from cabin modules to diesel engines. Actually, in 2018, at the international exhibition IAA, a Gazelle was shown, which tried on an in-line four 2.0 TDI of the EA189 series, which the group itself put on Volkswagens of seven models at a time.

It was believed that the production of such units could be started at one of the company’s sites – the Yaroslavl Motor Plant or the Gorky Automobile Plant. Only then came the US sanctions, the German side began to be cautious and the project was, in simple terms, “blown away”. And the Volkswagen heart went to just a few hundred cars.

And now, like a bolt from the blue, the news came out that GAZ was preparing to locate a certain light turbo diesel! A few weeks ago, a state-of-the-art “foundry” was launched at the plant’s facilities, where the production of a mysterious internal combustion engine was simultaneously planned: “But this is definitely not Cummins,” added company representatives. then.

Who then? Curious journalists noted that at last year’s Comtrans exhibition, a copy of the Valdai Next surprised the public with the Foton Aucan Power engine under the cockpit. And it seems that it will soon become the main driving force behind Sables, Gazelles and Valdaevs, as the Chinese Foton has long been a partner of the Russian company.

The two-liter version of this four-cylinder combustion engine is characterized by quiet operation (47 dB), low weight (185 kg) and a solid resource of half a million kilometers, in addition, an oil change is allowed every 20,000 km. There are options for different capacities in the range, and there is also … a modification with a volume of 2.5 liters – only for Valdai.

It is clear that representatives of the GAZ group are carefully hiding what kind of diesel will be produced at the site in Nizhny Novgorod. But in vain: FD20 and FD25 are good modern engines that in some respects even surpass European and Japanese counterparts. And if the Foton Aucan Power series is satisfied with the price, it will be good.
