Why are car washes closing all over Russia?

The car wash business only brings losses. Authoritative internet publications write that businessmen mostly closed car washes in Nizhny Novgorod, Moscow and St. Petersburg in the past year. In fact, citizens still have plenty of options to wash their cars regularly, even if it takes some effort.

According to Gazeta, due to the crisis and reduced revenues, motorists have started to save on optional services when visiting Moidodyr, while environmental requirements for car washes are becoming stricter. The rise in the price of automotive chemical goods and problems with staff brought their own problems. All this leads to higher prices. However, if you look at the numbers, it becomes clear that not everything is so bad.

The publication cites a study by 2GIS showing that in the past 12 months, i.e. from June 1, 2021, the number of car washes in major Russian cities has decreased by more than 4%. This is negligible.

If we talk only about this year, then from January to June 2022 the number of car wash complexes in Moscow fell by 6%, in St. Petersburg – by 7%, in Nizhny Novgorod – by almost 6%. That is definitely not lethal.

Suppose that the crisis has shifted demand from the usual car washes, where migrants work, to automatic washes, where the owner cleans the car himself. It often turns out to be faster, cheaper and better, because a person washes his own car.
