O Google invests 1.2 billion US dollars (approximately 6 billion reais) throughout Latin America. Sundar Pichai, CEO alphabet, last Thursday (9) during the Americas Summit. On his Twitter, he praised the continent and affirmed the value.

It’s great to see the spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation spreading throughout Latin America. I am proud to have supported him with $1.2 billion to accelerate digital transformation and economic growth in the region.” Pichai wrote on Twitter.

This amount will be distributed over five years throughout the region. In addition, it should be used in four areas: digital infrastructure, digital skills, entrepreneurship as well as inclusive and sustainable communities.

According to a report released by Google, this investment could generate an annual economic impact of $1.3 trillion in Latin America by 2030 in the region’s six largest economies: Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru. The report notes that this figure is 23% of the GDP of these countries combined.

In his Google blog post, Pichai detailed how the investment will be used. According to the CEO, there will be a significant improvement in connectivity and increased access to digital services in Latin America, including Google products such as search, Gmail, YouTube, as well as Google Cloud. The Firmina submarine cable, named after Brazilian abolitionist Maria Firmina dos Reis, will be the largest cable of its kind in the world, capable of running from a single power source at one end when needed.

When ready in 2023, it will travel from the US to Argentina, with additional stops in Brazil and Uruguay. The firm comes after three other important similar initiatives in Latin America: Monet, Tannat and Curie. Together, these cables provide a more reliable connection in the region.

Google has announced that it will offer 1 million balls from the company’s professional certifications. It is training that will increase access to well-paid jobs in fast-growing sectors.

Sustainability and Inclusion

Google also said that part of the investment will go towards building more inclusive and resilient communities. Over the next five years, $300 million will be provided to support non-profit organizations working in areas such as sustainability and economic opportunity for women and youth.

The capital will be divided into US$50 million in cash donations and US$250 million in publicity for these organizations.
