Small liftback of a large Passat: test drive Volkswagen Polo Exclusive
At first glance, the youngest model in the German brand’s own line can hardly surprise even an inexperienced user in a good way. However, the Volkswagen Polo has succeeded. The AutoVzglyad portal tells you exactly how.

Outwardly, the current generation of Volkswagen Polo can hardly impress anyone – now or at the beginning of its career in the Russian market. And the point is not only that the exterior has already become known on the domestic roads. The branding of the design he received – all these sharply defined headlight contours, bulging wings, the general “muzzle” and stern design – are familiar to millions of car owners from older models of the brand.

Well, the careful attitude of VW artists to the family characteristics of models when they change generations also contributes to blurring the brightness of the impressions of getting to know the next new product. But for real enthusiasts of German-made cars, the current Polo is valuable from a special point of view. In particular the top-class Exclusive package. To the knowledgeable person, such a Polo is a kind of “imaginary monument” to another Volkswagen model, the relatively recently discontinued Passat sedan.

Just don’t think it’s wrong that the Polo Sedan is in fact not a sedan at all, but a liftback! Yes, but these are just the costs of unification within the Volkswagen group: Polo in the current generation is practically the twin brother of Skoda Rapid. And that is why in the Polo the access to the trunk is now organized in exactly the same way as in Czech cars: together with the flap, the rear window also rises. As for me, it is much more practical and comfortable than the classic sedans. The fact that the liftback body type has not yet replaced the sedan everywhere can only be explained by the conservatism of potential buyers and the higher production costs.

Be that as it may, but returning to our Polo and Passat, the latter’s main “legacy” migrated right into the interior of a small liftback. In the top version, it is equipped with a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel, a 10-inch (“tradewind”) dashboard and an equally impressive multimedia system monitor above the center console. Starting the engine – of course “from the button”: Here too, keyless entry is organized in full form.

The only detail that stands out in the ‘passat’ style of the front of the Polo cab is the climate control. The single-zone climate control here is controlled using rustic (by Volkswagen standards) physical keys and a simple system status indicator screen. In general, sitting in the driver’s seat of the Volkswagen Polo liftback makes you feel nostalgic for the Volkswagen Passat sedan that left us.

As for the driving characteristics of the Polo, even the most unpretentious Volkswagen remains a Volkswagen with its verified characteristics. Yes, this is definitely not a Passat for you – if only because these are cars of completely different classes. But in the budget segment, it certainly has no competitors in terms of suspension, handling and other rider matters! At least in Russia. The liftback is of course loud and hard enough on the go. But first you get behind the wheel of some “Korean”. Feel the difference, then we’ll talk…

And the tandem of a 1.4-liter turbo petrol engine with 125 horsepower (the most powerful engine needed for the Russian Polo) with a 7-speed DSG robot simply has no right not to please the car owner. Such power for a small car is more than. At the same time, after driving on the highway at an average speed of about 120 km / h and three passengers in the cabin, the on-board computer shows a consumption of 4.7-4.9 liters per hundred. In the city in hard traffic jams – up to 7 liters! And in a normal traffic situation in a metropolis – no more than 6 l/100 km. Okay, let’s say there’s an error, but through simple math calculations, you understand that it’s extremely insignificant.

When you once again jump on a Polo of a Korean woman who consistently “absorbed” about 10 liters of fuel in the city, you experience unspeakable sensations. Agree, at current fuel costs at gas stations.

The only downside of the Volkswagen Polo, like all foreign cars now, is the price. According to the suggested retail price, almost 2 million rubles are being asked for the “heir” of the Passat. I don’t want to talk about the indecent margins of dealers at all. Yes it is sad. But there’s nothing to be done about it – these are the times now: not only Volkswagen has lost touch with the people, but all brands without exception.
