GM is working on ‘eyes closed and hands-free’ driving systems, a new breakthrough in the development of self-driving vehicle technologies.

The technology in question is known as Level 3 (L3) and allows drivers to completely relinquish control of the vehicle, especially on highways and at low speeds. Naturally, unlike a robotaxi, this requires the driver to take back control when necessary.

L3 systems are known to offer more advanced technology than other systems in the industry. Many car manufacturers today are focusing on Level 2 (L2) systems, which require the driver to maintain their attention. Even Tesla’s Autopilot and FSD software fall into this category, but GM wants to be one step ahead of its competitors by offering driving with eyes closed objectives.

Dave Richardson, GM’s Senior Vice President of Software and Services Engineering, stated that the company is working feverishly to bring the Super Cruise system to the L3 level. Richardson highlighted that Super Cruise is supported by advanced technologies such as lidar mapping data, high-precision GPS, cameras and radar sensors, and has an attention system that monitors the driver who needs to concentrate on the road.
