First you need to wash the wheels. Our goal is to save money, so no special means and equipment, just detergent – drain from a house bottle – and a hose with water. In the 17 years that have passed since the arrival of these discs in Russia, a lot of dirt has stuck to them, so we have to use a life hack from the Internet: we take a toilet brush, cut the handle, put it in a screwdriver and remove it dirt with a makeshift electric brush.

Mechanization of the process is always advisable – Ford also proved this – so shaping all four wheels into the desired shape takes about half an hour. Next – drying and pasting. It would be possible to adopt the card trick, which fell in love with all bloggers without exception, but we will do it in a simple way: paper tape and newspapers.

The wheels are thus ready for the first stage of rebirth: removing the old paint in places where it swells and “sanding down” the varnish, which is necessary to fix the ground. It would also be nice to mechanize this process, but then a fiasco happened: neither the “mill”, nor the Dremmel – he is a drill – did not give a good result.

It is clumsy, it is difficult to crawl, the blades hit and scratch narrow spots on the metal. It is best to do this with your hands and a regular sandpaper on a bar. By the way, it is convenient to make the bar itself for our purpose from a piece of insulation. Especially in the garage.

After preparing all four wheels in a few evenings, we begin the priming process. A can of special paint for wheels states that no primer is needed, but it is necessary to camouflage several minor operational defects. So we primed in two layers – the first “spray”, the second – tight – and wait for the “substrate” to dry.

The main question is how much primer and paint you need. We answer: to repair four wheels, one cylinder of both is sufficient. And enough with a margin.

After sanding the primer with 800 grit sandpaper and water, we dry the discs and get ready for painting. You need to take three types of sandpaper: 240, 400, 800. 6 sheets are enough for the whole procedure – two of each type.

We will paint in three layers: the first – “spray”, the second and third – thick. “Smoke break” between layers – 15-20 minutes. However, no more than 5 minutes are left to rest, because while the wheels are being painted in turn, so as the last hand wave flies over the fourth, the first is almost ready to repeat the operation.

The checkers are ready, we can summarize: 930 rubles was not spent in vain. The wheels started to look much more attractive, although flaws are certainly present. Closer inspection shows minor chips and scratches from mechanical polishing. But this can only be seen with careful study of a few centimeters.

From a meter or moreover in motion, the discs just look perfect. Much better than before the renovation. Thus, this approach can safely be considered as both relevant and highly applicable for craft repairs. Especially considering its price.
