Attention, power steering works: why does the steering wheel suddenly become heavy
After a day in a traffic jam, a slight lethargy is found in the hands towards evening. Wait a minute, but what about the hydraulic booster? Is the handlebar heavier? If you look closely and listen to the sensations, you can find a new character of the “steering wheel”. Really “amp” orders “live long”? Let’s try to solve the “low blood” problem. How – does the portal say “AvtoVzglyad”.

The power steering is the key to comfortable and safe driving, an extremely reliable and powerful unit that can travel more than one hundred thousand kilometers. However, he should also show signs of attention. For some reason, in the service manuals and official dealers of various brands, they believe that the power steering is a maintenance-free assembly, which is not taken care of, and the only thing worth taking care of is an annual check of the liquid level. A very brash, mind you, opinion!

First, like any node of this type, the steering rack and associated hydraulic booster must be lubricated. In addition, the lubricant must be strictly specialized, suitable for the criteria of the manufacturer. Universal compositions, which many domestic car owners choose for their low price, are the way to the service area. Savings are of course appropriate, but not at the expense of later expenses. The power steering fluid has analogues, but it is still better to use only original formulations.

The second important point is the frequency of replacement. It’s not known for sure where the myth about power steering fluid’s “lifespan” came from, but the fact remains that no oil fills up forever. And the GUR tank is no exception. By the way, the lubricant is also hygroscopic, that is, it absorbs moisture, so for three years the most taxed operation – no more than 25,000 km – literally turned it into jelly. Masters of specialized services, especially those who serve commercial parks, will not let you lie: according to the internal order, the oil in the power steering is changed every 40,000 km.

The point is small – change. In a trivial situation, to restore the previous articulation and mobility of the handlebars, a partial replacement is enough, requiring two bottles of brand fluid and a technical syringe with a long length of tube.

The procedure itself is not difficult and can be carried out in any place convenient to the car owner: having pumped all the brown “slurry” from the power steering tank with a syringe, pour fresh to the highest risk and turn the steering wheel on its place for a few minutes. Then we repeat the operation, surprisingly comparing the drained and freshly filled ones. It turns out that the power steering fluid must be transparent!

Two or three approaches are usually sufficient, after which the behavior of the steering wheel changes noticeably for the better. It starts to run more easily, returns to its original position, and the motor itself stops making tense noises. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, but it only took to change the oil in a loaded unit!

In an environment where new cars are becoming a rarity, akin to a unicorn in a forest near Moscow, every vehicle owner should have at least basic car maintenance skills.

Let’s face it, this is more of a content that unlike authorized dealer service will significantly extend the life of a machine as well as a high selling price at the time of renewal.

This is an experience that guarantees not only a smooth delivery from point A to point B, but also a painless return to the original. In short, it’s worth it and better late than never.
