What malfunctions will lead to a penny throttle position sensor malfunction?
The throttle position sensor (TPS) rarely breaks down, yet such an accident does happen. If this happens, the cause of the malfunction will not be easy to find and the repair may be delayed. In this case, the car will idle unevenly, traction failure and other problems occur. The AvtoVzglyad portal tells about the nuances of the repair.

TPS sends data to the electronic engine control unit about how far the throttle is open. After all, every time the driver presses the gas, the damper changes the opening angle, which means that you have to change the amount of fuel supplied and adjust the ignition timing. As you can see, the importance of this spare part is difficult to estimate. And if it breaks, there are plenty of problems.

The most obvious sign of a TPS failure is a floating idle. It can get to the point where the engine stalls on its own at traffic lights. But the problem is, they can swim for many other reasons. This makes troubleshooting much more difficult.

The causes of malfunctions are hidden in the design of the sensors. The so-called film resistance suffers from wear of the mechanical part. The second type is contactless. There is no mechanical part here, that is, there is nothing to break. But here the wiring is capable of “putting a pig”: either a short circuit or an open occurs. And if the signal from the sensor goes wrong or does not exist at all, then problems with mixture formation and ignition timing will arise in any case.

The easiest way to find out what the problem is is to connect a scanner to the car. But not everyone has such an expensive device. Therefore, for those who are not ready to go to the service and pay money for diagnostics, we recommend using a voltmeter.

It is necessary to check whether there is voltage on the sensor. To do this, remove the connector and start measuring. If the voltage is normal (12-13 volts), the TPS will work. If not, you need to look for a leak. Possible wire break or short circuit. And if the sensor itself is broken, it will not be repaired. It is easier and cheaper to buy a new one and replace it.
