New WhatsApp feature lets you leave groups at…

Only group admins will be notified when members leave.

With the new feature, WhatsApp users will be able to check in, share their location and receive alerts for their region, as well as get self-protection tips, the best evacuation routes in the event of a natural disaster, and even active alerts in other states.

Dario Durigan, director of public policy for WhatsApp in Brazil, revealed that a new project is underway to send continuous updates and warnings about natural disasters.

“This is an unprecedented partnership in the world. It is the first civil defense system that has a permanent structure for sending alerts via WhatsApp. The app is already frequently used by groups and communities close to civil defense for coordination and warning. What we will do now is take this usage to another level through a verified account that gives people the confidence to talk to civil defense.”Durigan said.

Registration

The tool is already being developed and is now working on the final details before it reaches all Brazilians. Thus, users who are interested in receiving these notifications through the meta messaging application can now send “Hello” to the number +55 (61) 2034-4611 and start the registration process by interacting with the chatbot.

With the new communication service, WhatsApp will join SMS, Telegram, pay TV and Google, which also use their channels to alert the public about natural disasters. It is worth noting that real-time information about events can help search teams and even the public about possible risks.
