The production sites of Volkswagen Group Rus in Kaluga and Nizhny Novgorod, as well as other car assembly plants of foreign companies, have been in a state of complete uncertainty in recent months. But it seems that the fate of one of them has finally been decided: the Wolfsburgers leave the GAZ Group factory.

In early June, it was announced that Volkswagen Group Rus was offering a “balanced package of benefits” to those Nizhny Novgorod employees who are willing to leave the company of their own free will. More specifically, they were promised a severance package of five or six salaries, health insurance and personal IT equipment.

Even then, it became clear that Volkswagen is planning to part with the Nizhny Novgorod plant – the only question was the timing. And so the production shutdown procedure began: according to Kommersant, it began on July 5. GAZ Group in turn is not going to liquidate the site, on the contrary. The company will find a new partner to utilize the freed up capacity.

Yes, the Russian car industry is doing very badly. The Volkswagen site in Nizhny Novgorod will be closed, other companies have been quiet for a month now and have no plans to leave it. Take, for example, the Nissan plant in St. Petersburg: initially the Japanese said they would go back to work in September, and now they have postponed the launch until March 2023 …

It turns out that all hope is for AVTOVAZ. And, by the way, Togliatti promised to reach a production volume of 500,000 cars per year by 2023.
