Let’s just say that time is not easy in many areas of our lives right now. And motorsport is no exception. Last year the Silk Road was supposed to go from Russia to Mongolia, but life has changed. The neighboring country was shut down and the transcontinental rally was halfway through. Many participants were very dissatisfied and the organizers of the shortened race had ruined their reputation quite a bit.
The sports public tended to believe that by 2022 there would be significantly fewer people willing to drive the ShP. It turned out that the most pessimistic forecasts were still quite optimistic! The status of the World Cup stage has been forgotten and as a result the composition of the participants has changed considerably this year. But every cloud has a silver lining, which Russian athletes nevertheless decided to participate in the raid, which, with negative emotions after 2021, even then put a big cross on this marathon. There are problems with traveling abroad and participating in international competitions. Therefore, almost all the best racers in the country arrived at ShP-2022. The Minsk Automobile Plant did not stand aside, which for political reasons was not allowed to participate in Dakar-2022.
The race will be held for the first time in Dagestan and Chechnya. Then the athletes are in Kalmykia, bypassing Volgograd, Lipetsk and finishing in Moscow. Start in Astrakhan. But not all participants go to Moscow. The first three days of the competition, parallel to the “Silk Road”, the stage of the Championship of Russia – Baja “Gold of Kagan” takes place. 38 off-road, truck and ATV teams from Russia, Belarus and Turkmenistan participate in the national championship. They will end on Saturday 9 July and the rest will go to Grozny.
Meanwhile, a Grand Tour of the amateur category “By the Ways of Peter” appeared in the “Silk Road”. Amateur drivers on their own off-road vehicles pass the route along with experienced rally raid participants. Obviously they don’t go along with well trained athletes – this is not realistic.
A separate program has been drawn up for the Grand Tour category, the route itself is not competitive, but rather educational. Special tasks have been developed here, devoted to the study of the history of the regions and the activities of Peter the Great. A total of 20 entries were honored in the Grand Tour category. Perhaps the most interesting participants were crews from China and Mongolia, who rented two KamAZ sports trucks.
“It is already clear that the race will be very difficult,” said Vyacheslav Subbotin, head of the GAZ Raid Sport team. – So on the first day of the race it was 30 degrees overboard, on Friday – 33, on Saturday -34 is expected. The main participants of the “Silk Road” will come to Grozny on Saturday, and there meteorologists predict 38 degrees. The next day, however, it becomes “cold” to 37. You can see how dry the ground is – there has been no rain since spring. High temperatures place high demands on both machines and people: it will be difficult for everyone. But that’s the beauty of rally raids. Each time, the contestant gets the chance to grab the bar that previously seemed unattainable. To do this, you must not overtake an opponent, but overcome yourself!
