The heat reveals many of the car’s problems, including problems in the engine cooling system. Antifreeze, which has the function of removing excess heat from the engine, can escape through cracks and leaking connections. And it can boil due to various malfunctions in the system. Both are dangerous for the engine. And when this happens, the fluid supply must be replenished. But what if the antifreeze “goes away” and there is nothing to add to it?

Cooking in a traffic jam is a different test for every motorist. The nerves are already on edge because of the fear of the engine, for which severe overheating is death. And then there are disgruntled drivers who yell at the victim honking their horns and cursing instead of stopping and helping. In general, it boiled – keep patience and composure and do everything possible to get the cooling system back up and running. And what can actually be done when the coolant is at zero and boiling and nothing can be added in the trunk?

It is probably not worth reminding you to stop using the car immediately. Every car owner knows that engine overheating is primarily an expensive repair, or even a partial or complete replacement. So as soon as the temperature crept up, we urgently put the stove on full and taxi out of the stream to the side of the road. Then we turn off the engine and leave the ignition on so that the heater continues to work, remove excess heat from the engine compartment, we wait for the engine to cool down a little.

Furthermore, opening the hood allows you to visually assess the level of coolant in the tank without opening the lid (it is extremely dangerous to do this immediately after stopping). And if you understand that it’s boiled away, and there’s nothing to recharge, but you need to move on, then we’ll look for ways to fix the problem.

Knowing what kind of antifreeze has been poured into the cooling system will allow you to stand by the car with the hood and hand up and seek help from other passing drivers. Believe me, there are normal people among them. If a compassionate car owner hasn’t found your brand of antifreeze (you shouldn’t look at the color), inspect what he has. Maybe he uses a universal grade G12++ coolant. This can be mixed with other brands of coolants. Well, in the end such a solution is better than nothing at all.

If there was no antifreeze, but distilled water, this is also fine. However, you need to understand that if you add a liter or two of water to the system, the car will still boil after driving a certain distance – the boiling point of antifreeze diluted with water will be lower in this case. But it is quite possible to add 200-300 ml. After you get to auto service and troubleshoot the system, all you need to do is completely replace the fluid with the one recommended by the automaker.

You can consider it lucky if your car cooks near a gas station or hardware store. At the gas station you can replenish the stock of antifreeze and distilled water. A hardware store can become a source of only distilled water. If the problem is more global – the antifreeze is leaving the system like a river through a broken radiator, a cracked pipe, or for some other reason, and there’s no auto parts store around, then it’s best to get a to use a towage service. Yes, it is more expensive. But it’s certainly tens of times cheaper than driving a boiling engine to where you wanted it, and then repairing it.
