The new system is in the testing phase with two electric vans. Ford Electronic Transit in Cologne, Germany. In addition, the new technology will help drivers avoid speeding tickets. Currently, Ford vehicles in Brazil are already equipped with a modem that allows remote communication with the FordPass app.
Michael Huyn, Urban Solutions Manager, Ford Europe, commented: “It can be proven that connected vehicle technologies help make driving easier and safer for everyone, not just the driver. Geofence allows you to slow down where needed to improve safety and create a more pleasant environment.”
Thus the creation zones 30 km/h is one of the main measures to reduce risks for pedestrians. The main goal is to provide the driver with longer reaction times and lower impact speeds, which reduces the severity of crashes. It is worth noting that in Europe approximately 30% of road traffic deaths are among pedestrians and cyclists.
How geofencing works
Geofencing technology will use tracking GPS data exchange to reduce the speed of the car when entering the restricted area. Thus, the driver will be informed about the new limit via the dashboard. The system can be turned off at any time.
In the future, Ford plans to allow drivers to define their own geofencing zones at speeds up to 20 km/h. The manufacturer also plans to improve urban air quality by programming hybrid models to automatically start in electric mode when entering low-emission areas.
