The retro rally “Capital” was held in Moscow, in which more than sixty classic cars competed for the accuracy of the distance. One of these is the Mercedes-Benz 250 SE, in which the AvtoVzglyad portal columnist took part in the race, who has fully experienced what the rare “grandfather” is really capable of, who has lived all his life in Monte Carlo and registered at sunset in Russia.
Initially, this German S-class sedan was brought from the “millionaire reservation” – Monaco, and then it went around a little, as it were, and ended up with the current owners. It happened in 2007.
It took a little more time to cheer up the German “grandfather”. Something was “shamanized”, changed and repaired. As a result, the car began to look chic, although this is one of the basic modifications, and not a full “filling”. The body has been painted, but nothing has been cooked or changed here over the years, so the iron is absolutely intact. There is not even any rust, thanks to the German steel workers.
Retro rally is a holiday, but there is still a sporting component, so the battle is uncompromising. Our crew is determined to win, so first I take the most honorable place in the S class – in the back seat.
Spartan luxury comfort
Here you can immediately see that the upholstery is original, not changed. However, it is well preserved. I look up and marvel at the wooden window frames with self-tapping screws screwed into them. The owner explains that such solutions used to be used quite often. And the tree was not only used in the side window openings, it was also framed by the front and rear windows.
The time to settle in the cabin has passed. We leave for the starting position, salute and set off. Now we are in a race. After already driving a few kilometers, I notice that Mercedes-Benz has not lost its smoothness over the course of its life. However, time is relentless. The springs of a well-shaped bench are felt like a fifth point through the upholstery, and when driving through bumps, something sometimes thumps in the rear suspension. There is air conditioning here, but we don’t turn it on to avoid problems with appliances. But even without a “cooler” through the open front windows there is good airflow.
If we talk about the spaciousness in the cabin, then it is like a small apartment. It is comfortable for people of all heights and there is a place to fix the legs. But the car is 55 years old!
“Stay to the left!”
Then the march book starts to move. Missed a turn – get penalty minutes. Success therefore depends on the connection between driver and navigator. If they are a real team and understand each other perfectly, then everything will be fine. For speed, the crew communicates in jargon. For example, “pants to the right” means there is a fork where you should turn right. “Stick on the left” – a road pole after which you have to turn again.
In this way, the search of the organizers is gradually being solved. By the way, quite complex and ambiguous. Therefore, many navigators thoroughly prepare for the competition and hang smartphones and tablets in front of them. There is no such closure in our Mercedes. The tablet, which displays the time and the necessary information about the rally, fits perfectly on the glove box lid and does not even fall over when braking and turning. Apparently, half a century ago, the Germans guessed that their cars would participate in a retro rally.
The car is a beast!
Finally it was possible to judge what it is like behind the wheel. The 2.5 liter engine with 160 hp turned out to be cheerful for its age. It reacts responsively to pressing the accelerator and the “mechanics” allows you to turn it. True, at traffic lights sometimes the first gear is engaged with a characteristic creaking, but this is forgivable for such a car.
Once, while maneuvering in a closed area, the engine began to “sneeze”, but pressing the gas made it happier. By the way, they never interfered with the engine and there were no serious problems with it. Only regular oil changes performed, but minor repairs. This is how power units should be built!
As for visibility, the Mercedes recalled the Soviet Zhiguli. The left mirror is small, and the right one is not very visible. Therefore, when rebuilding, you have to turn your head so as not to cut anyone. But the surrounding motorists are happy with such a neighborhood in the stream. They let them pass willingly, she honks greetings, so there are no problems with maneuvers.
The 1967 S-Class is itself a center of positivity. Passers-by grab their phones to take pictures of the rarity, wave their hands and smile. Cyclists give a thumbs up.
Modern cars just do not cause such joy. So if you want to get a load of positive emotions, come to the retro rally. This is where cars get a second life and the Mercedes-Benz 250 SE is a good example of this.
