An interesting challenge that does not suit everyone: an interview with a pilot
Russian rally champion Evgeny Sukhovenko will talk about his routine as a racer, plans for the coming seasons, tell what exactly every self-respecting motorist should have in the trunk and what difficulties an athlete faces along the way.

You have participated in the rally twice. Will there be races this year?

— Yes, this year we participated in the Silk Road Marathon, which took place all over Russia from July 6-16. I also played for the GAZ Reid Sport team.

Why didn’t you reach the final point of the rally last year and withdraw from stage 3 of the race?

— Yes, last year, after the 2nd leg at the training service, we discovered that our fuel tank was leaking and it could not be repaired on site. There was a fire hazard, for safety reasons we withdrew from the race, which of course was a very difficult decision for us.

What is the hardest long rally and what difficulties do you encounter on the road?

– The hardest part is to stretch the power of the car and the power of your body over the entire distance, choose the optimal pace between speed and reliability and reach the finish. Physically it is not that easy: on the road all day for 2 weeks, and in the evening rest in the field. And this is such an interesting challenge that not everyone will take on. Once there was a long drive in bad weather and had to stop constantly because the car was covered in mud. On such trips I always take a pressure washer with me, it helps to clean the glass and walls of the car in a matter of seconds. By the way, I have a Greenworks battery washer, I’m very happy with it and it lasts a long time to charge.

Do you help the mechanic with repairs during the star, do you need to understand car repairs?

— We do not have a technician immediately upon arrival. It is only present in trucks, we have pilots and a navigator. And if there are any problems, we will solve it together.

What are the most necessary things to take with you on arrival?

— I always take ski goggles with me in case the windshield falls out. Also a phone, a pocket knife, a flashlight (necessarily battery powered) and a supply of water and food if the marathon is expected to be long.

What should be in the trunk of a car not only for rallies, but also in everyday life?

– This is of course a first aid kit, a fire extinguisher, a spare wheel, a wheel wrench, a tow rope. For me a kind of “must have” is a wrench and a compressor, because we do not have a mechanic with us during the race, and devices help to perform many tasks, I try not to change my habits when choosing tools and choose also for the Greenworks brand, which helps me a lot not only in professional activities, but also in everyday matters, and a good driver should always be prepared for emergencies.

Tell us about your partnership with GAZ Reid Sport?

– I joined the team at the end of 2017, I was invited to 1 race. They were then looking for young pilots who drive rallies. We passed the Russian Cup stage as a test race, won it and that’s how I stayed in the team.

What do you do besides rallying? Do you have any hobbies other than sports or is that your whole life?

— In addition to the rally, I work in a company that deals with agricultural machinery and parts for it, I manage a certain unit in this company. The sport of your life is rallying, where I ended up after I won my main titles when I was very young and trained as a driver. But now I don’t go to rallies anymore, but I hope I will return to this sport. I also ride motorcycles for amateur races.

What are your plans besides the Silk Road?

– Yes, in addition to the Silk Road, I would really like to have another track day or an amateur race on the circuit of Russia. I would love to experience some kind of rally race, but I still don’t know where and when. Everything will depend on whether I can find partners who will support me in this.
