Employees of the Road Safety Research Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia prepared an overview of traffic accidents on the roads of the Russian Federation
According to the results of six months of 2022, 53,537 car accidents were recorded in Russia, in which people were injured. That’s 7.2% less than in the first half of “coronavirus” 2021. In the current year, 5,651 people died on the country’s roads (3.9% less). In the same period, 67,708 people were injured in traffic accidents – 7.5% less than a year earlier. The largest decrease in the number of road casualties was noted in Karelia (-45.2%), Chechnya (-59.5%), Kostroma region (-46.9%), St. Petersburg (-41.9%) and the Nenets Autonomous Okrug (− 100%).
Traffic police data shows that the number of “drunk” crashes fell by almost 20% in the first half of 2022 compared to the same period last year to 5,295 of these crashes. They killed 1014 people (decrease of 34.2%) and injured 7138 civilians (19.1% less). The traffic police notes that crashes involving drunk drivers account for 9.9% of the total picture of crashes on Russian roads.
A significant weight in traffic accident statistics is incidents involving pedestrians. The analysis shows that the largest number of accidents (59.5%, or 8464 episodes) associated with pedestrian collisions occurred outside the boundaries of pedestrian crossings. Pedestrians killed in these types of accidents are responsible for more than three quarters (81.7% or 1055) of the total number of deaths in collisions.
In total, pedestrian accidents account for 26.6% of all accidents. In the first half of 2022, 14,219 such cases were registered. This is 6.7% less than a goal earlier. The collisions killed 1,292 (−1.6%) pedestrians and injured 13,433 people (−7.3%).
Traffic police analysts note that the traditionally low proportion of accidents involving technical failure of the vehicle or conditions under which its use was prohibited was recorded – 4.9%. In the six months of 2022, 2,646 such cases were registered, which is 21.2% less than a year earlier. For example, it can be argued that the “abolition of technical inspection” for private passenger cars, which took place on January 1, 2022, did not lead to an increase in accidents after the disappearance of state control over the technical condition of millions of citizens’ cars.
Police statistics have recently recorded an explosive growth in accidents involving “pilots” of various forms of individual mobility (SIM) – electric scooters, unicycles, gyro scooters, electric bicycles and similar devices. In the six months of 2022, there were 370 IMS accidents in Russia, killing six and injuring 382. Compared to the same period last year, the number of such accidents immediately increased by 174%. The death toll has doubled and the number of injured has increased by 176.8%. The maximum growth in this direction is evident from Moscow (94 cases) and St. Petersburg (57 incidents).
