The Ministry of the Interior is going to buy car registration plates made of materials whose quality has previously been questioned. Portal “AvtoVzglyad” provides details.
The “Special Purpose Center for Road Safety of the Ministry of the Interior” has placed on the public procurement portal announcements of several tenders for the purchase of license plates for cars and motorcycles. The total amount of the future purchase is 1.9 billion rubles. With these funds, the department plans to purchase a total of 6.8 million license plates.
This includes regular white numbers for cars, motor vehicles and trailers, as well as yellow numbers for public transport (taxi and buses). In addition, blue GRPs (for police cars) and red for diplomatic vehicles are purchased. In summary, the tender is scheduled for the end of this month.
License plate supply contracts run until the end of next year, 2023. According to Kommersant, until recently, the reflective film covering the aluminum blanks of license plates was supplied from the US by 3M.
In connection with the well-known events, 3M stopped cooperating with Russian organizations. Instead of American film, Russian license plates are now covered with similar products of Chinese origin. It should be noted that about 10 years ago, Russian companies involved in the production of GRZ had to leave Chinese film and switch to American.
This was due to the fact that license plates covered with Asian plastic started to peel off very quickly and lost their reflective coating. American products didn’t behave like that. There are serious doubts that the Chinese plastic suppliers have deigned to make serious changes in their production process. For this reason, it can be assumed with a high degree of certainty that in the near future, as many years ago, the polymer coating will begin to peel off again from the newly issued Russian license plates.
