Small but brutal: test drive of the Suzuki Jimny SUV with “automatic”
Despite the already quite long biography of the latest generation Suzuki Jimny, by the standards of the car world, this car, as it turned out, does not cease to attract the attention of others. The AvtoVzglyad portal conducted a long test drive of the smallest Japanese SUV.

If we approach the rating of car dimensions from an outerwear seller’s point of view, then the Suzuki Jimny will definitely be somewhere in the S range. Despite the fact that it is much more common for all of us to see real SUVs (frame, with an “iron”, and no electronic four-wheel drive system) in sizes XL. And even better – XXXL. However, the concept of “mini jeep” has been a Jimny feature since the very first day of the model’s existence. I don’t see much point in “spreading with thought” design since the latest incarnation of “Jim” (its fourth generation) has been on the market for quite some time.

But knowing this, you are quite surprised by the unexpected observation of the reaction of others to SUVs. I’ve noticed that if you leave Jimny in a parking lot in a fairly busy part of the capital, you’ll definitely find a man walking around looking intently at the car when you get back to the car. Since no model has been known to the Russian buyer for four years, such an effect has never been observed. And mind you, this is happening in Moscow, which is saturated with all kinds of foreign cars. Apparently there really is something in the appearance of the Suzuki Jimny. Or is the wording of my children correct, who call him nothing more than “Gelendvagen puppy”.

If you put a thoroughbred German and Jimny side by side in parallel, it is quite possible to assume that they are “relatives” from the front. Both frame, with high ground clearance, both with “square” bodies, both with round “eyes” headlights. And both, as far as I know, like girls. At least I personally ride Jimny of different generations, in the vast majority of cases I see ladies of different ages. In principle, yes, most likely it will be convenient for a woman. The car has a high (relatively natural) driving position, which gives you a better feel for the dimensions, a short body, which makes it easier to find parking spaces in the city. She can jump over any curb without breaking the bumpers.

Not a car, but a “dream of the hostess” – if you mainly want to carry only yourself, your loved one. However, driving will not work. Frame construction, short wheelbase and high center of gravity do not contribute to precise steering and aggressive riding. As well as a 102 hp 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine with a 4-speed “automatic”. But frankly, we admit that in the city you can’t really accelerate faster than 90 km/h with any car. It is characteristic that it is precisely at this mark for “Jim” that perhaps the range of comfortable driving speeds ends. No, in principle it is possible to fire up to 120-130 km/h. But first, taxiing at such a speed becomes work that requires a constantly high concentration of attention.

And secondly, in this movement mode, his engine starts, excuse me, to “eat” fuel like a jet fighter. You are constantly tormented by filling up with petrol in a 40 liter tank. And at speeds “up to 90 inclusive”, it is comfortable to drive the car, and the flow rate is not selected for 10 liters per hundred kilometers. I activated the cruise control, connected the phone with music to the “multimedia” (with touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink) and rolled quietly along the highway…

But perhaps the most important feature that fans of the Suzuki Jimny model appreciate is its off-road capability. Shod with “toothed” tires suitable for such purposes, it climbs through the mud and gullies, as they say, as if “stuck in one place”. The right set of off-road transmission options – with a “lower” and other stuff – bumper overhangs like Smart, curb weight is only about a ton – what else does it take to storm the “pampas”?!

Perhaps there’s only one thing that can stop Jimny off-road – if the driver himself puts him on a hill or tree stump with his belly or a bridge. Or drown in too deep a ford. In other situations, “Jim” instills in the driver’s body a sense of complete indulgence. Thanks to him, even the “blonde” city will feel like a brutal jeep, driving an indomitable and powerful iron device. Overall the car was good for the city and for the dirt. But in the space between these two substances, so on the highway, not really.

However, it would be strange to expect otherwise from a true SUV, albeit an S size. Perhaps the main “disadvantage” of this machine is now one: the cost. So, the official website of the Russian representative office of Suzuki recommends dealers of the brand to sell Jimny at a price of 2.4 million rubles for a car with a 5-speed “mechanics” to 2.65 million for a variant with a automatic transmission with 4-speed transmission and “in full fill”. In a real car dealership, “Jims” are now traded at prices ranging from 2.8 million to 3.8 million rubles. Instead, they’re just in the showroom. Unfortunately…
