BMW came with manual gearbox for “crooked” drivers

The Bavarian carmaker has created a manual transmission that makes it impossible to mix up gears. Portal “AvtoVzglyad” provides details.

BMW has been granted a patent for a mechanical transmission design that makes it impossible to accidentally “stick” second gear instead of fourth, or first instead of third. Such driver errors, as you know, lead to a sharp increase in engine speed. This is in no way helpful to him, because by “turning” the engine, the driver causes a rapid failure of the drive unit. To avoid such situations, the gearbox was equipped with special locking valves – as in reverse gear.

They physically prevent the transmission lever from moving to positions that do not match the current RPM and engine speed. It is only possible to lower the gear if it does not threaten the health of the “engine” in specific conditions. It is not known whether the invention will be applied to production cars. The fact is that the Bavarian automaker is gradually withdrawing “mechanics” from the repertoire of its models, and for the most part directing the MCP only to fans of “mixers” who buy sports cars.
