The events in February forced many foreign suppliers to stop cooperating with Russian car factories, leaving production with a dire shortage of parts. In search of alternative options, domestic automakers largely turned to the Chinese. But now, it seems, we will not wait for help from the Middle Kingdom.
Chinese company Weichai Power has suspended deliveries of gas engines to the Kama Automobile Plant. Trucks of the K4 series, some dump trucks and buses from NefAZ, which is part of the KamAZ group of companies, were left without methane engines. The Chinese authorities have pushed the supplier to this decision: they fear that by cooperating with the ‘prohibited’ organizations of Russia, the European Union will also impose sanctions on China.
What will happen to the KamAZ methane trucks now? Production of the 5490 liquefied natural gas tractor will be completed by the end of 2022, a representative of the Kama Automobile Plant told Izvestia. This model is replaced by KamAZ-54901 from the K5 line. It is powered by a “native” engine – a six-cylinder “row” P6, modified for “gas” needs.
However, not only KamAZ cooperated with Chinese suppliers – other car manufacturers also hoped for the help of Asian friends: especially AvtoVAZ and UAZ. Togliatti planned to buy in China at least anti-lock braking system ABS and automatic transmissions, Ulyanovsk – “mechanics”.
And if the former can still “slip through”, the latter should think carefully: UAZ, like KamAZ, is under sanctions – as an enterprise capable of producing equipment for the armed forces of the Russian Federation. What will they do if the Chinese “topple” them too? Until this happens, it makes sense to choose another path: put all your efforts into the production of your own units and components, so as not to depend on those who can end the friendship at any moment.
