Thunder under the bottom: how to “calm down” the crankcase protection?
In Russia, crankcase protection – not a plastic “fig leaf”, but a full-fledged steel plate – is considered a mandatory option, vital for any car. Where “legs grow” is understandable, because our ways and aspirations don’t always match our abilities. But the culture of operating this additional equipment, despite decades of use, was not common to all drivers, and not to every gas station. Details are on the AvtoVzglyad portal.

The thin metal pan that contains engine oil is vital, but extremely fragile. Once damaged, the engine will experience oil starvation and the owner of the car will experience the wrath of the gods. Because a piston that gets stuck due to lack of lubrication is a sentence. So, initially, the native Zhiguli and Muscovites, and then all foreign cars coming from the outside world, were immediately equipped with crankcase protection – a metal sheet that took all the rigors of the Russian road.

It hides entire centimeters of ground clearance, disrupts the cooling system of the internal combustion engine, clogs it with dirt and clay, interferes with the oil change, overpaying for work, but it is mandatory to install it in Russia. A plastic housing, which is intended to replace metal on imported cars, is not our option. Only iron or thick aluminum! Even for “cars” that never leave the asphalt. Berezhenogo, you know who, protects. And you can’t argue! One reinforcement sticking out of the land “concrete” or a cobblestone on the primer immediately multiplies all arguments by zero. And you don’t have to look far for such examples – we have two in every garden.

However, retrofitting a car has its own operating rules, which we don’t remember until the thunder hits. In this case literally.

Indeed, over time – the service interval, as a rule, is more than sufficient – the crankcase protection begins to come loose and rattle. And if it consists of several components – for example, it is a structure that includes the engine, the gearbox and the transfer case – then a whole orchestra comes into play, breaking the idyll of the journey in every possible way. The mistakes of designers far from the automaker’s headquarters, time and simple wear and tear do their job – the brackets stop holding and no matter how the mounting bolts are tightened – the creaking and rumbling will continue. And who crawls under the car every two or three weeks or comes by for a service? Therefore, it is worth applying a technical mindset and imagination.

In order to “calm” the crankcase protection and long-term victory over bumps under the bottom of the car, the metal sheet at the joints is laid with thick rubber or synthetic seals, in which, for example, windshields come to the warehouse. It must be non-flammable, resistant to road chemicals, fuel, engine oil, “brake” and friction material.

The minimum service life is 10,000 km or 12 months, and after that – replacement if necessary. Simply put, for the next oil change you need to prepare an old car mat, which you can find in any garage cooperative, or some foam plastic. One thing is nice: it is usually free if you set a goal in advance.
