Today is the last day of the Eastern Economic Forum 2022. Many experts spoke here about the many problems facing the country. The subject of the automotive industry did not stand aside. What threatens the domestic auto industry in the near future, the AvtoVzglyad portal found out.

Naturally, the plans of our car flagship attracted the most interest. Because if not AVTOVAZ, then who? And the leadership of the car giant did not let us down. The company’s president, Maxim Sokolov, reported at least two controversial news stories. The first is that the company will increase its car production to 500,000 units per year next year. The second is that to achieve this goal, the recruitment of workers in Togliatti will begin in the fall, it is planned to hire as many as 4,000 people, which is about 10% of the company’s staff.

You would think that the former Minister of Transport and the former Deputy Governor of St. Petersburg messed up something with the numbers: All through 2021, when everything was in order with logistics and any imports, AVTOVAZ sold a total of 350,714 cars of all models and modifications. But no, Mr. Sokolov’s Napoleonic dreams were confirmed by the entire Deputy Prime Minister and Head of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov. In addition, he stated that somewhere in the bowels of his department there is a certain business plan for the development of the company.

As the saying goes, a legend is fresh, but hard to believe. Production of the most popular VAZ model Vesta has not yet resumed. In terms of sales among Togliatti products, Granta took first place, the release of which was to be completely discontinued at the beginning of the year. However, is it not too presumptuous to rely on a car that costs from 678,000 rubles without ABS and ESP when building great projectors?

At the same time, the company’s management does not consider it possible to return the truly worthy XRAY crossover to the conveyor belt in the near future. Why XRAY! Production of the unpretentious Largus is not expected to resume until late 2022 – early 2023. In the meantime, only the mentioned Granta and Niva are actually released in the so-called simplified versions. Behind this euphemism is simply a modification, devoid of basic electronic assistants, which, from the point of view of security, has a place in the last century.

As for the own production of ABS and ESP, Maxim Sokolov promises to start production of the first no earlier than a year, and the second and even later – in 2024. And for this, buyers are offered incomprehensible semi-finished products for quite a full-fledged money. In addition, lucky owners of “new technology” will have to be more careful when choosing tires, many of which are specifically designed for cars with electronic security systems.

Togliatti’s leadership says achieving 80 percent localization is a very ambitious goal. But excuse me, because four and a half years ago, Renault Senior Vice President Nicolas Maure assured everyone that LADA’s infamous localization was 85%. Miracles!

Despite the shadowy nature of the announced “Big Push”, the leadership of AvtoVAZ did not fail to satisfy the witnesses of the sect of environmentally friendly eutotransport. Not being able to make the anti-lock braking system, which has long been known to everyone, on its own, the company is going to produce electric E-Largus.

In the current economic situation, where even Europeans who have finally switched to ecology agree to burn coal, the above-mentioned project is undoubtedly one of the most necessary and important projects to eradicate the hunger for cars.

But especially the unveiling of Denis Manturov, who announced the transfer of the main emphasis in the development of the automotive industry, was most striking. According to the recently adopted industry strategy, it appears that it will be made in the production of components, while earlier priority was given to the entry of the world’s largest majors into the Russian market. Really? And how to understand all these ritual dances around the localization of production and frenzied compensation from the budget for achieving high performance?

In conclusion, it should be noted that Nikolai Sobolev, general manager of the company Sollers, also delighted us. He said his subordinate organization is serious about creating its own brand of passenger cars. So far, with the exception of UAZ, it has developed joint ventures with foreign companies Ford, Isuzu and Mazda. But Western manufacturers stopped supplying car kits, and the Sollers factories in Yelabuga and Vladivostok stopped.

The idea of creating a new brand seems very appealing for presentation, but in reality it costs very little – at least until Sollers has its own platform. And there is none, except the UAZ. But building a new brand on it is clearly not the best idea.
