At the beginning of this year, Electric Vehicles Manufacturing Rus (EVM) presented an electric truck based on the UAZ Profi chassis in Moscow. It was called EVM Pro. The electric UAZ made a lot of noise, but also received a lot of criticism. First of all because of the price. And recently EVM invited journalists to St. Petersburg to get acquainted with the research center, where the model was born. The observer of the portal “AvtoVzglyad” is ready to share his impressions of what he saw.

The EVM research center is located in one of the industrial zones of St. Petersburg. There is a design office and a hangar for mounting a traction battery and an electric motor. As for the battery, it consists of ten segments, each of which has 12 cells. The cells come from China and are then welded into blocks. Each segment has a heat exchanger plate that operates in heating or cooling mode. This creates a traction battery, which is built into a large black box behind the cab. (clearly visible in the photo). As the representatives of the company assured, the load will last for 300 km, and with a full load – 200 km.

In addition, the engineers developed their own switching unit to control the entire system, as well as an electric motor. This is an 85 kW synchronous electric motor with a weight of only 50 kg. Interestingly, the electric motor was mated to a Hyundai Dymos serial gearbox, which was installed on the Profi. Now the transmission is supplied by the Chinese concern BAIC. Of course, the well-known unit was remade for “electromobility needs”, leaving only the second gear. This decision made it possible not to touch the stock drive shaft and rear axle. As for the transfer case, there is none.

In the future, engineers want to design an electric motor that will be placed near the rear axle. This removes the drive shaft, reducing the weight of the car. Here I note that weight is a pain point of any “electric train” because traction batteries are heavy. As for the EVM Pro, this electric truck weighs 2650 kg. and any lighting of the structure will benefit the car.

But enough words, it’s time to try the truck in action. It turned out that everything is not so simple. Since there are only two prototypes and they do not have number plates, the journalists were not allowed to drive: they drove only in the passenger seat through the territory of a closed park.

The impressions of the journey are familiar and unknown at the same time. The cabin is a well-known UAZ. Hard plastic panels, spartan finishes, a narrow bench, on which two passengers fit with their elbows pressed together. Ulyanovsk technology brings melancholy. But the car’s behavior is perky. It only starts under good tires and the acceleration is quite strong even in the closed space of the industrial zone. It seems that such a UAZ will easily beat any Mercedes-AMG at a traffic light.

Unfortunately, nothing can be said about the steering wheel and the brakes. From the side of some anomalies, however, I did not see that “Profi” is famous for the fact that it steers slowly and the brakes leave much to be desired. At the same time, the weight of the truck increased. I feel it with my whole body when passing speed bumps. But the chassis doesn’t even have a superstructure…

The driver driving through the city streets must take this into account and also the weight of the load that will be in the back. Can the standard braking system withstand such loads? I have no answer. But I suppose the braking system of the machine needs to be finalized.

A reasonable question arises: why did you choose UAZ Profi, and not Gazelle or another chassis? EVM CEO Ilya Rashkin says UAZ is simple and maintainable. I agree, but the build quality of the car is weak, the comfort is spartan and rust is visible on the frame of a new car.

I am confident that EVM will be able to supply its powertrain to most commercial models. Let’s say, for the same Gazelle NN, which has a much better build quality. But for the time being, Profi remains the basis for the innovative installation. An agreement has already been made with the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant for the supply of chassis.

As for the plans, by 2023 they aim to assemble 1000 cars. OTTS, which will allow the launch of EVM Pro, will be received within a month and a half. And the price of new items is 4,500,000 rubles. This takes into account the charging station that comes with the kit. Not much is available for a simple private trader. Therefore, only large companies will be EVM customers. Suppose the first 250 cars are bought by entrepreneur Alexander Lebedev.

It only remains for us to wish the project success. EVM has made a good power source. The case was only for UAZ. When are the designers going to teach the car to steer and brake normally? After all, traffic congestion in megacities does not forgive miscalculations. Isn’t that why UAZs are almost invisible in Moscow and St. Petersburg?
