Unloved child: why the luxury crossover Ferrari Purosangue is doomed to fail
Famous for its many successful racing and sports car projects, Ferrari succumbed to relentless market pressure and released its first production crossover in its history, the Purosangue. But the prospects for the next novelty from Maranello are downright bleak. And why, explains car expert Sergey ASLANYAN.

Italians don’t know how to make crossovers. And also large executive sedans. And minibuses. But they are excellent racing, sports and “hot” cars, regardless of size. If you have to flood everyone with boiling water of emotions and have to turn the corner with a loud shot from the muffler, departing for a point at a fixed speed, the Italians have no equal. They have a small FIAT 500, and Alfa-Romeo Brera and Lancia Delta HF Integrale are equally fast, manageable and reckless.

But here in the world there was a hopeless fashion for crossovers. For Italians, this kind of transport is incomprehensible. Before him, they played hybrids with the same bewilderment. Tightening all deadlines, intentionally late to the last detail.

A crossover is a poor man’s car who wants to look like the owner of a jeep, but has retained a reference to a Sunday hypermarket rather than a deep ford. It’s no coincidence that crossovers around the world have finished off the minivans that used up their seven-seat comfort once the third row of seats appeared in the SUV.

It seems that the Italians have a good school for four-wheel drive and they can make a crossover without much animosity. The all-Italian FIAT is ready to offer history, lust and as a starting point the pre-war Fiat-SPA TL.37 (1938), the post-war FIAT Campagnola (1953) and the cutest Panda 4×4 (1983).

But still, the Italians endured the current fashion to the last, ignoring the entire car industry, until Alfa Romeo took up the subject. In 2003 she started slow, slippery, distracted as much as possible for a siesta, to create a concept, which in 2016 was named Stelvio and conveyor belt registration.

Half-living Maserati tackled an undesirable topic in 2011, with the introduction of the Levante serial crossover in 2016. And Lamborghini, never making money from the LM002 SUV (1986), waited for a cry from the German owner – using sporting design techniques and an Italian strike, it reluctantly received its first Urus crossover from the Volkswagen Touareg in 2017.

FIAT, as always, approached the subject mainly on the basis of other people’s patterns and without special costs, repeatedly marrying more skilled and more four-wheel drive. Thus, in 2006, the FIAT Sedici crossover was born in a marriage with Suzuki. In 2014, a joint venture with the American Chrysler produced the FIAT 500X. Yes, and Panda, which became ugly and banal in the second generation, returned in 2005 with four-wheel drive, few people were satisfied with the result.

And after all the Italian manufacturers reluctantly plunged into an unloved subject and upset themselves and customers with the result they had learned, it was the turn to step on the rake of the only independent player in the Italian national team – Ferrari .

The former head of the FCA concern Sergio Marchionne, who was fond of Ferrari, said there would be no crossover under this brand: “only over my corpse.” Fulfilling this condition, after the death of the great head of Ferrari, made Purosangue horrified.

Like any unloved child, the car broke down. In identification, the greatest importance is attached to the logo. Without this hint, it is impossible to recognize a thoroughbred “Italian” in the next Chinese crossover. As a propitiation for history, the car was endowed with an excellent V12 engine. But they balanced the feat with suicidal back doors opening against the movement.

The world premiere of Ferrari Purosangue took place under enthusiastic tears. The reputation of the brand is such that the world perceives each new product with enthusiasm, pre-singing and willingly applauding. This is exactly what Ferrari is counting on, so that the usual admiration can be deceiving both itself and the public.
