Nuro is a company that makes autonomous cars and has a 10-year contract with Uber. Vehicle deliveries will begin from late September in three cities, with delivery in Houston, Texas, and Mountain View, California, where a significant expansion of autonomous deliveries is planned.
Nuro was founded by former lead engineers on Google’s self-driving car project and already has partnerships with North American retailers such as Kroger and Walmart. And also with restaurant chains such as Domino’s Pizza and Chipotle Mexican Grill.
“With our unique autonomous vehicles and Uber’s phenomenal scale and reach, we can expand food delivery from your favorite local family restaurants to national chains.Cosimo Leipold, head of partnerships at Nuro, said in a statement sent to the US press.
The vehicles are compact and can hold up to 24 grocery bags. In addition, they are temperature controlled and reach speeds of up to 70 km/h. Initially, autonomous deliveries will be made to restaurants and stores participating in the Uber Eats program. Uber recently updated its app to improve the product experience, this feature is available in 33 countries.
Work for full autonomy of cars
Uber has been working on self-driving cars for a long time. Also in 2016, the company bought Otto, a company specializing in the development of autonomous trucks. After successfully completing the 193-kilometer journey, this prompted the startup to continue investing in autonomous delivery pilot projects.
Uber, which aims to have only electric vehicles on its platform in the US, Canada and Europe by 2030, is also testing autonomous delivery with Serve Robotics, which provides roadside delivery vehicles, and autonomous driving startup Motional.
