Not a disease: Nissan cars have learned to kill viruses

The COVID-19 pandemic, which has claimed the lives of 6.5 million people worldwide, has prompted Nissan to develop a unique technology that can disable dangerous viruses, fungi and bacteria in a car. What is it? Addition of organic catalysts to paints and varnishes used for exterior and interior decoration of automobiles.

Scientists from Japan’s Tohoku University helped develop Nissan’s unique additives. They proposed the use of organic nitroxide catalysts, which not only protect automotive upholstery materials from sunlight damage, cracking, fading and other problems, but also successfully fight viruses.

In simple terms, the substances kill the “infection” by oxidizing organic compounds, inactivating the so-called spike protein. And without it, the virus — including SARS-CoV2 (the causative agent of the “corona”) — can’t make “contact” with human cells. The same goes for all kinds of fungi and dangerous bacteria.

We add that research into the new technology continues and it is too early to talk about the massive use of organic catalysts in paints and varnishes.
