Pump failures are a common problem with Togliatti engines. She did not ignore the author of these lines. Once on the track I heard a small creaking under the hood and the engine stalled. Then he called a tow truck, and when the service disassembled the engine, they made a disappointing diagnosis – the valves were bent. As a result, the engine was waiting for a major overhaul.

Usually a pump failure manifests itself beforehand. There are antifreeze leaks at the pump connections or there is visible fogging of the housing. Finally – noise during operation, ie rustling or crackling, as I had.

So why, say, on the LADA Granta the pump can already seize at 40,000 km run, while on the LADA Vesta with a 1.8 liter engine it runs quietly up to 80,000 km or more?

To do this, you need to look at the design of the node. An important part of the water pump is the impeller. Usually it is plastic or metal. Less often – composite.

The plastic impeller has the advantage that it has no inertia load, making it much easier to start when the engine is started. The disadvantages include a small resource and a change in the geometry of the wings at high temperatures. This reduces the efficiency of the pump. Usually these products are the cheapest.

The metal impeller is heavier and does not change geometry when heated. Therefore, such a node is preferable. Or you have to choose expensive pumps, where the part is made of a composite material.

Togliatti engines have pumps from different suppliers. For “Grants” they choose cheaper, because the car is “of people”. Therefore, the condition of the water pump must be closely monitored. When driving 40,000 km, it is better to replace the pump. And buy the one that is more expensive. Better yet, a ready-made “kit”, where there will be both the pump itself and the timing belt with rollers. The overpayment is fully offset by the reliability and durability of the node.

By the way, Vesta has a Contitech pump and this company is known for its quality. Therefore, the knot goes more than 100,000 km without any problems. It would be time for Russian component manufacturers to improve the reliability of their products.
