For the past six months, Kaliningrad Avtotor has been unable to operate normally due to component supply interruptions. And if the factory had to stop production of BMW cars in the spring, Kia and Hyundai cars were still being produced, albeit in limited numbers. And now the company is refusing them.

As Avtotor has exhausted its stock of components, the last Korean cars are now leaving the assembly line – assembly is expected to be completed in early October. What’s next? And then – adjustment of production and preparation for a new project.

— We are starting the implementation of a new policy and the production of new models adapted to the new conditions for the development of Russia as a whole and our production in the country. First of all, there will be new partners. We start with the production of new cars. There is a chance to reach a serious volume next year,” said Vladimir Shcherbakov, founder of the Avtotor holding company.

He noted that the investment volume in new projects will exceed 5.7 billion rubles – the money will be used to modernize equipment, improve technologies and launch eight new buildings of the enterprise. Avtotor will start production of electric vehicles, with the plant directly involved in the development, and most of its components, especially electric motors and batteries.

As for Kia, Hyundai and BMW, Mr. Shcherbakov acknowledges the resumption of projects with current partners. But only if ‘the situation changes’.
