— The participation of Russian athletes in the Dakar rally is due to the need to sign the questionnaire of the International Automobile Federation (FIA), condemning the Russian special operation in Ukraine. In our view, the content of this document is political in nature and also violates the principles of a level playing field for athletes. We deem it impossible for us to sign such documents and enter competitions under such conditions. We are always with our Motherland, especially when it is in a difficult situation,” reads a message on the official website of KAMAZ-master.
The Dakar race is expected to take place from December 31, 2022 to January 15, 2023 in the same place as last time – in Saudi Arabia. Recall that in January 2022, the KAMAZ master team led by Dmitry Sotnikov became the winner of the Dakar in the truck class in this country for the second time in a row. In total, the Russian racing team has won 19 victories in the Dakars of different years.
The AvtoVzglyad portal previously reported that the financial situation of the KAMAZ master team lately leaves much to be desired. For example, in the spring of this year, it became known about the management’s plans to sell part of the “stable” fleet – the legendary race cars that have been on the podiums of the Dakars in recent years. Among other things, they put up for sale a truck model 43509, which took the team to victories in the Dakars in 2019, 2020 and 2021 (they asked 60 million rubles for the car).
Most likely, such a decision of the management of KAMAZ master was caused by problems with the financing of the “parent” PJSC KamAZ. The auto giant’s position is very difficult due to component supply problems and the severing of relations with Mercedes-Benz’s freight division, which left Russia. The beautiful and patriotic decision of KAMAZ master to leave the Dakar also indicates that the team is now unable to participate in the rally due to financial circumstances.
